Re: BBC wants to charge for iPlayer

The 'just skip the commercials' brigade are responsible for something far *worse* than commercials, in my opinion -- broadcaster and advertisers are not idiots and now because of the skippers the...

Re: Chip/PIN US credit cards yet?

I just got back from the UK and although ultimately I didn't really have any trouble using my swipe-only American Visa, it was pretty comical to see the befuzzled expressions of the majority of...

Re: tell me the positives!

I'm certainly not having a go, (and it might that I am watching entirely too much of Orange Is The New Black, :) ) but this sounds like the sort of thing people who have been sent to prison for a...

Re: tell me the positives!

Oh, I agree with this 110%.

We have not had cable TV (or even over-the-air TV, but that's because I just haven't bothered to sort that out) for over two years now. We have Apple TV and...

Re: tell me the positives!

I would agree 100% with the driving test comment - when I moved over here I went to the DMV to find out what I would need to do to get a US license - pick up a copy of the equivalant to the Highway...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

This is exactly what I was saying earlier.

You are lucky enough to be rich -- no matter how empty your wallet might feel every month, if you have had flawless medical care for 24 years with no...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

>What more can I say but ... HAVE GOOD HEALTHCARE INSURANCE.

This reminds of the old Steve Martin routine about how to get a million dollars and NEVER PAY TAXES!

First: get a million...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

Exactly. My insurance is excellent, I have nothing to complain about personally. Until I lose my job, and with it my insurance.

The 'let them eat cake' attitude I run into all the time here makes...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

The 'medical' part is great - doctors, nurses, and support staff here are almost uniformly excellent, as good as you could hope to find anywhere in the world.

The 'system' part is diabolical....

Re: Minor Healthcare Rant...

We had a pretty miserable experience lately with the health system: my mother-in-law is up in her early eighties and has had some pretty serious heart problems, starting a couple of years ago. She...

Re: Critical Thinking and Debate in the US

I work for a huge corporation, and I, too, have found the attitude of not wanting to buck the system, keeping your head down, covering your arse totally prevalent.

It's all just fear.

I have...

Re: 2 large explosions at Boston Marathon

Where do you live? I wouldn't leave my car unlocked in London, but I also wouldn't leave my car unlocked in DC or Atlanta or Baltimore either.

Re: DC or Boston for 30something female?

Yes, you're right, I forgot about that one. It's a bit far from me in Arlington which is why it slipped my mind, but it is a goodie. But is it the only one? There's the Arlington Cinema and...

Re: DC or Boston for 30something female?

"I don't know what "great cinema" means but there are plenty of cinemas."

The DC area has plenty of cinemas, but on any given week 98% are showing the same half a dozen films, all the major...

Re: Virginia Dreams??

I live in Northern Virginia. Whatever the short-comings of the area (there are many), I can't say I'd recommend it for the climate.

The winters tend to be ridiculously ridiculously cold and the...

Re: Bereavement flight

Sorry to hear this.

I went through the same thing a couple of years ago, and for what it's worth, both Virgin and BA came up trumps.

I had a Virgin flight booked for a week later, but got...

Re: Suitcase recommendation

We've been very happy with our bottom-of-the-range Samsonite cases, I think they were about $100 several years ago -- but the best decision we made was to buy them in red and green - it makes...

Re: Paying back my English student loan

If you ever plan on going back to live in the UK, I would get the wheels in motion to start paying back the loan. If you move back they will catch up with you eventually, and it will only be a...

Re: Want to keep my UK driving licence

I didn't know about this. So, basically, they treat your DL as your 'papers', as an ID card. ...

Re: Difficult to make friends in America?

This is one that (depending on the day) irritates and/or baffles me.

So many people I know or work with seem to base their identity on...

Re: Some questions about the USA

The DC is definitely cleaner and safer than NYC or Chicago.

Of course, that's because it is tiny and closes early every night - and barely runs even when it supposed to be open. I'd call it a...

Re: New York city for toodlers

I've done NYC with toddlers several times and I've learnt from bitter experience that you really want to go easy.

Forget the Empire State, you have to stand in about three long (hour+) queues to...

I just came back on that flight on Sunday evening. It does look like it has about four different codeshares.

The flight was fine - check in at LHR smooth and quick, security efficient, but US...
