I am in US with L-1 and my wife L-2. We had really hard time getting her SSN after numerous attempts, finally got it, but due the "valid for work only with INS authorization" on her card, employers...

I would investigate whether L or EB easier to get Green card in US. I know L-1 to Green Card is relatively easy.
L-1 also easy to renew at the border once you are Canadian citizen.
