New L1B & L2's - What to expect at US immigration...
Hi,
We are flying out on May 28th for the first time with our L1B & L2's visas (2 adults and 2 young kids). The kids are likely to be bored enough waiting in a normal non-resident immigration queue and so if there is likely to be more red tape, I'd like to prepare them to expect it.
Someone I know who has been through the Canada to UK process thought we would be likely to be taken off to a room as first time visa entrants for a potential grilling. Is this likely? (I know it's always possible).
Anyhow, would really appreciate anyone's experience and knowledge. Is there any documentation we need to take, other than the visa application documents.
Many thanks,
Doug.

I believe it will be simple questioning without going to a special room.I got L1A on the border twice in 15 min or less, and renewed on the border twice-as a Canadian citizen-I don't know why but once they asked me to come when "NAFTA specialist" is present.
I am sure you will have business cards w/you.That is the only one I can think of, lets see what the experts say..

I had all the originals of the documents in a presentation folder in my hand luggage, but they never asked to see them.
I was asked what my job title was, where I would be living and then did the usual fingerprints and and picture, passport stamped and away I went.
Remember to fill in the WHITE I-94 not the green one.
Unless you can think of any red flags, you should be good to go through pretty easily.

my experience mirrors that of the last poster.
no big deal

Howevber, it is up to the guy on the desk on the day, and, as others in other posts have said, they can be 'unpredictable'

I would agree, normally no drama - when we first travelled on our L visas we did have all our documentation with us just in case. When we arrived at Denver I was simply asked who I worked for, what type of work I did. My wife was cautioned not to get divorced or she would be out of status and have to return to the UK, and then we were welcomed to the USA.

As long as one of you (prefably the L1 holder) can hear what the immigration officer is asking you, you are able to answer in something better than monosyllabic sentances, and have all your application paperwork to hand, you'll be fine and dandy.
If however, like me, your ears have not adjusted after the flight, cannot hear a thing, and repeatedly shout "what did you say, I can't hear you?" at the officer, things may take a little longer!
Same goes for when passing through customs!
It'll be fine! - we took less than 5 mins at the regular immigration desk, couple of questions to the L1 hubby about when starting work, who work for etc, and that was it.

Don't worry about it. AS others have said make sure you take your documents but I've never needed to show them (L1B). In fact I've found it easier going through immigration since I got my visa.
Finally good luck.

Hubby L1A and son L2 went through no problem, no questions just like arriving on holiday - I got hauled off to homeland security cos my fingerprints wouldn't scan. One hour and 1 question later (Who did my husband work for?) and they let me go.
