I think its ok. yess you can love it or hate it but I'm glad I can talk about Britain as my origin rather than Congo, Bangladesh, Surinam, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Eritrea ..America and so on. Statistically it is more likely to be born and die in shit than coming from the UK - so I'm happy to be blessed with that and yes I like the place.

Back then, being profoundly deaf from birth usually meant you were unable to develop very complex language skills and also therefore to express complex ideas. His students would write things like they would be going home in three sleeps.

I grew up in the UK and went to Hong Kong when I was 21. Been in South Africa for nearly 30 years now (my mother is South African). The last time I was in the UK was about 20 years ago. AFAIK I don't have any close family left there.
I left because I was restless, and really felt life might have something better to offer, and I wanted to see a bit more of the world. Haven't regretted it at all. I've been very happy here but the current problems are undeniable. Probably predictable too. Many wife moved back to Scotland about 18 months ago for various reasons (mainly her family and concerns about the future). She has some regrets and visits for long periods, and we've no intention of seperating, let alone getting divorced. I'll probably do a recce in a month or two but I really don't know what to expect. It's just been so long, and I'm not sure I'm looking forward to it, but I'm trying to be open minded about this. We'll see. |

Dave well, Ive found plenty of humour on this site!! UK is home, as for countryside, where did you live?? Plenty of open space and beaches if you want to loook!! Whats the point of all open space in oz if you have to share it with 10 billion flies? Would rather be in uk and huddled round my cave fire than die of toxic poisoning from fly sprays!! I mean come on 20million in 200 odd years?? Hardly top sales figures!! Don't see America holding "get a new life" shows ever......(not that I'd go there!) to make it out to be the dogs nuts..... England is, to me, dark and grey, yet sunny and crisp. Windy and rainy, yet hot and dry. Green and lush, yet snowy and frosty. Old and historic, yet modern and cosmopolitan. Every little part of the UK has its own antithesis somewhere. That variation in environment cannot be duplicated to the same extent anywhere else in my opinion.
