I had a disturbing conversation with a Pakistani guy at work this week. I said to him 'what distinguishes Britain (and Australia) from many (most?) other countries is that you can walk down the street without being stopped by the police and 'asked your business and/or for ID'. He replied that he HAD recently been stopped by a policeman and questioned for 'acting suspiciously' i.e. a possible terrorist. That upset me. I sort of understand why we have all got to be vigilant in our war on terror but I don't like losing our fundamental freedoms.

This is the rubbish that a lot of ex-pats spout:mad:It is not drab and dreary, it is only that if you are "drab and dreary" yourself.

England has its fair share of drab and dreary weather. Even you can't deny that. I am not saying that Australia doesn't have it either btw. Our first holiday in Cornwall in September 1991. We stayed in a cottage in Crackington Haven. In the 2 weeks we were there it rained for all but 2 days. I remember walking around Boscastle and Tintagel in the pissing rain. So for goodness sake take the rose tints off.

Sydney has had more than its fair share of the dreary stuff lately, but in all seriousness, I like the changeabilty. I find endless heat drab and dreary.
I can see it from your viewpoint though. I guess its just who you are and what you prefer. I used to think I would never get tired of warm sunny days. I am well and truly over it.
My daughter thought i was a real saddo offering to scrape the ice off their car and getting pleasure from it when i was there

I didn't say I preferred warm and sunny days Flea. At the moment I can't wait for it to cool down, it is so sticky in Perth at the moment. Mr Backhomeatwhateverhisbleedinnameis just does my head in.

It what suits you personally, I did not like the heat in Perth and when it rained it can go on for days, I much prefer the weather in the UK myself which has been far from "drab and dreary" since I have been back, it's this constant "oh the weather is crap in the uk" that gets me going...no it is not:thumbup:infact the last month has been glorious with temperatures well above average for this time of the year.

For me there’s something special about the British weather in all its wildly varying and unpredictable forms…..For a couple of years I lived a few miles north of the equator and I used to have a big map of the Lake District on my wall. Often I just used to stare at it, picturing the green hills receding into the mist/clouds, all overlaid with a gentle rain and get a bit misty eyed myself…..

Hey BHAL, of course it gets dreary!! Thats what makes it England!! I love getting overcast days as it reminds me of home! I do agree it is your mind set though. Also as there are not as many hot and sunny days in England it makes you appreciate them all the more......I used to jump out of bed when the sun was shining and get a bounce in my step for the day. Now in oz I just get on with it, and moan that it's too hot for walking or biking!! Never bloody satisfied!:)

LOL when my son first went to live in UK he was utterly bemused by the locals' preoccupation with the weather! He just put on a jacket if it was cold and took off a jumper when it was hot but those around him seemed to be sensitive to a 1C change either way - I think he spent most of his first months in hysterics.

My God, as if the Aussies were really all like that. My experience is that when the temperature goes over 20 degrees Centigrade they turn their air conditioners to maximum. When it goes below 15 degrees they start to talk about 'arctic conditions' and adverts appear for fur coats, electric blankets and heaters!

LOL he's a Canberran and we dont have aircon (though not for want of me trying!) and as parents we made the poor kid bike to school every day for 6 years through hot and cold. He knew better than to complain about the weather!!!

I hope he is coping at the moment though - on exercise in the Brecon Beacons and the last one he experienced they had absolutely foul stuff so hope it is better this time or he will be whinging about the weather along with all the other Poms!
