Galloway's on the Celtic fringe, good god man! Also, my experience of Suffolk goes no further than Haverhill, which is as replete with the chavs and Albanian sex-workers you describe as any other British town.
Either way, like I said, winter is crap, or at least it is in my opinion, and crucially (for me, anyway) the few weeks of light and warmth we get from June - August is not enough to compensate for the awful weather of October - April. Tableland, I must say that from reading your posts, you are being rather aggressive and negative to a lot of people here. Not just Backhomeatlast who you are having an argument with! It's been said before that this forum is for people MOVING BACK to the UK. Therefore they are from there and know all the good and bad bits about it - and they STILL want to go there! It is not as if we have never been to the UK and you are giving us all a warts and all picture of it, to be helpful. Of course you can post on this forum - but to be so patronising to other posters who are well aware of what the UK is like, is totally not necessary and I fail to see what you are getting out of it. |

Yes, Haverhill is not great - but totally unrepresentative of Suffolk.
And as for the eastern european sex workers, whenever I visit the UK they must all be using their benefits cash to visit their grannies back in Tirana - I never seem to see any on my visits to Britain. someone in my OH's family is the ex headteacher of Haverhill ... he took it from an at risk school to being a great primary and he derived the most joy in his professional career seeing those children from underprivileged backgrounds, who struggled with homelives I dont want to think about, achieve something and really enjoy and benefit from e decent education. Its easy to be the head of a smart school in an affluent area - it takes balls and vision to take on something like Haverhill and give that area something to be proud of. |

I think that it is these people that deserve icon status, they don't do it just for personal recognition, but genuinely for the children.....I personally went to one of those schools as a child in a not so lovely area, and the teachers there recognised that it really was our one true chance in life to believe in ourselves. We were given probably a better education than most as they were passionate about helping us. I did infact gain a place at the local grammar school after being given support and guidance from my amazing primary teacher. What I think is so sad is that we as adults should all be taking responsibility for the youth culture of today, and giving them confidence etc as they are the ones who will be running the country in the future, and we will then see the Karma that we have created. When I get home, I am going to continue with my studies and go for my teacher training cert as I feel that I can contribute to those in under privileged areas. I feel quite passionate about it, as if it wasn't for the support I had as a child who knows where I'd be now. We really do have the opportunity to turn uk around, if only we all stick together and stand up for what we believe in. In response to tableland, I have to say that regarding the state of the uk economic forecast, I too have a keen interest in it, and if you actually look more closely you will see it is a global picture, not strictly limited to uk. When push comes to shove, if I have to survive on mung beans and rice and live in a tent, I'd rather do it in England......not just for the family support, but also the basic environment, you'd need to be a bloody expert to survive here......avoiding bugs, snakes etc |
