Eurostats statistics for 2003 are at

http://www.finfacts.ie/Private/bestprice/eds2003.pdf

but can we really trust an organisation that recently lost Wales?
Yes indeed we can :-)

Showing UK at 103, and NL at 106 for Food (100 is the average for the
EU) Which is all much of the muchness and both are pretty cheap for
the "old" EU.

And it shows just how Expensive the UK and then even more so
scandinavia are for alcohol and tobacco! Romania is the place for a
cheap smoke and Bulgaria for a cheap drink.

Cheers,

Jim.

NL supermarket food prices are 5% down on a year ago.

Overall
UK is in group 1 @ 121
NL is in group 2 @103

As are the UK's - food inflation is negative across much of Europe.

It's in Charlie Brooker's TV column in the Guide (weekly entertainment
supplement for those who don't know), which is generally humorous and
ironic in tone. Those who seem to be so outraged either don't realise this
or seriously need to get a life.

I tend to get the impression of things being cheaper in the UK than in
other western European countries, but that might just reflect the fact
that I know where to find the cheaper stuff in the UK. Because I live
close to several different stores, I tend to know which items are better
value at each, and shop accordingly. General comparisons can be hard
because you rarely have exactly the same produce, especially when it
comes to food. Even with companies having the same stores in each
country (e.g. Aldi) the food they sell is completely different.

That's just London. The thing about London is it's completely unlike the
rest of the country. But most Americans are too stupid to realise this.

Hotel prices in York are similar.

A year ago, we paid GBP100/night for what could only be described as
a converted garden shed. Exactly why an 80 room hotel with only 5
rooms occupied chose to fill the garden shed accommodation first was
beyond us.

There are hotels of that sort of price anywhere you go in the UK, there are
many such examples here in Newcastle.

What I'm meaning is anywhere but London you can get decent (travel inn or
similar) accomodation for around £50 per night, but not London.

The best thing about London is its book stores. The Americans
should come and try out Foyles.

Only if you dont want to find a specific book. The standard
method of sorting books in Foyles is to pile them up randomly.
