Not when I am in a room by myself, but I have been known to speak French in
France when needed and I can read French in private without moving my lips.

I'm fairly sure that when I'm in France or Italy on a leisurely day at about
3pm I've drunk more alcohol than most of the locals. Of course I'm on
holiday; they're not. The exception was a microbrewery in Lille full of some
kind of engineering/computer type students. A polytechnique perhaps. That
was an eyeopener -- made the Silver Bullet in Columbia, Missouri, look like
a temperance hall.

Cheers (and I mean cheers),

Does this imply that you do speak French to yourself when alone and move your
lips when reading French in private?

In France it seems more of an eccentricity. I'd say Paris has plenty of
largely cheerful street drunks but by plenty I probably mean more than one
per visit. Far fewer and seemingly less dangerous than London or even Cork.
I've met only one aggressive drunk in Italy on half a dozen visits: a man
who said he was Algerian on Via Ostiense raging about, I think, George Bush.
I don't understand Frangliano very well.

Yes. I dream in French, I swear in French, I even *grumble* in French.

You know some French words, maybe just enough to survive. You have no idea what people are
really saying, even if you know the words. A little like when I read a newspaper from the
Minho - I know all the words, I have no idea what they are doing together!

I'm officially at intermediate level.

Do you mean you have? :-)

Yeah right.

It's not at all like when you read Minho.

And you think that "très exotique" means "très exotique".

Très intermediate, Martin...

Yes, right!
