    >"England...God and my right,"

hang on, you cant put *England* for UK.

Wikepedia has:-
United Kingdom Royal motto (French): Dieu et mon droit ("God and
my right")
Scotland (Latin): Nemo me impune lacessit ("No one provokes me
with impunity")
Wales (German): Ich Dien ("I serve" - Prince's motto), (Welsh) Y
ddraig goch ddyry cychwyn ("The red dragon inspires action"),
(Welsh) Cymru am byth ("Wales for ever" - unofficial)
Isle of Man (Latin): Quocunque jeceris stabit ("Whithersoever you
throw it, it will stand")

you are right that our National anthem is not very nice..
but it was a product of its times

word are from Goffredo Mameli .. officer that died for the defense of Rome
in 1848, villa del vascello.. ( repubblica Romana.. )
music is from Filippo Novaro.
nicer would be

Va pensiero.. from Nabucco..
but nobody till now decided to change it..
even if for our Patriotic and Independece wars it had the same meanings..

As the writer of the Chard company web page
(http://www.24carat.co.uk/index.html) remarked, a more modern
translation might be Dont f**k with me! IMHO, quite a
national motto!

It starts out well enough, but it gets bogged down somewhere around
Cicero's helmet.

I have yet to find an Italian who knows the words, beyond the first
few lines.

Scots infantry! Even worse if there's a war on.

Schumacher and his team seem to sing-along fairly robustly.

Pflaum response:
"Strongly with the weak people, weak person with the forts;" is that
the literal English translation No 3, or does "Forte con i deboli,
debole con i forti" mean something else?

LOL!

I can't imagine how painful it must be for Italians to see Silvio's
face plastered on nearly every billboard with expressions like "We
choose to move forward", "Nothing to fear", "The left think everything
is going badly - leave them to lose" and my favourite "Operation
Truth".

Well, if you look at Berlusconi's finances, everything is going just
fine. I can't wait to see his face when he loses the next election.

"Strong with the weaknesses, weak with the strengths"

I don't get it...

As I recall from my youth, it was:

"Shaddupa you face!"

I must have heard that a million times. I assumed it was the national
motto.
