It was probably a scam. If you speak good Italian, they rarely try to
rip you off. Tourists are fair game.

Canada = A Mari usque ad Mare ("From Sea To Sea")

and all the others (most nations and many states / provnces) can be
found at Wikipedia.

It's a code phrase to put the 1 million Canadians who live in the USA on
full alert. (It's in Latin because we're better educated.)
