Default Does Italy Have A Country Motto?

Does anyone in this group know if Italy has an official country motto
(e.g., In God we trust)? I've search the Net and haven't found any
mention of a motto for Itlay. I even shot off an email to Italy's US
embassy several weeks ago asking them the same question, but haven't
heard a word back yet. Seems very strange that Italy doesn't have a
motto.

The reason I am looking for Italy's motto is because I'm in the process
of developing a new travel site and I'm using each country's motto as
the headline-leader on each country's description page (See sample by
clicking here http://www.worldtravelalmanac.com/europe/france.html ).

Again, it seems very strange that Italy doesn't have a motto. If that's
truly the case, would anybody like to suggest a motto? If the group
comes up with a few suggestions, how bout we hold a contest and vote on
the motto that most members of the group likes best. Whichever motto
wins, I'll use it as the headline-leader for Italy's home page.

Thanks for your help!

Q: Does the Italian Republic have a motto? What is it?

The Italian Republic does not have an official motto. In place of a
motto, an often-used phrase is a sentence found in the first Article
of the Italian Constitution: "L'Italia una Repubblica democratica,
fondata sul lavoro" (Italy is a democratic Republic, founded on
labor).

The sample you cite quotes the French Franc as the national currency of
France. Which is fairly typical of the accuracy of most of it. Don't give up
your daytime job.

If you are talking about the USA that is not their official motto. That is
"e pluribus unum", which means "out of many, one".

There is a national flag, a national anthem (horrible), a national
emblem, but not a motto. I'd use the starting words of Art. 1 of the
Constitution of the Italian Republic

http://www.quirinale.it/costituzione/costituzione.htm

(although me personally I prefer Art. 11)

On the home page of http://www.quirinale.it (which is the official site
of the President of the Republic, you'd find links to "i simboli della
Repubblica" (the symbols of the Republic) ... so that's the best
reference you can get.

If the UK has one I don't know what it is. "Dieu et Mon droit" is
the Royals motto.
Scotland has Nemo me impune lacessit ("d'yer wanna fight,
Jhimmy")
Wales Y ddraig goch ddyry cychwyn ("The red dragon inspires
action"), catchy!
Falkland Islands: Desire the right (Maggie Thatcher I suppose?)

Thanks, Giovanni. I used Google's translator to translate "L'Italia
una Repubblica democratica, fondata sul lavoro," and got this; "Italy
is one Republic democratic, founded on the job," which I suspect
probably isn't an accurate translation. If you don't mind, could you
translate Art. #1 for me, and try to make the translation as short as
possible. If nobody else comes up with a better motto, I'll use yours.
Thanks!

Not sure about the UK either Reid, but for England I'm using,
"England...God and my right," which I found on the site below.

I rather like the national anthem of Italy. The words are bit
stultifying, but the music is nice.

The national motto of Italy is "Governo ladro".

Yes, the royal motto, I think that's all there is. Its on my
father old cap badge (Guards). "The wrong kind of snow" would be
another :-)

Barbara, the only Italian-to-English translation for the word "ladro" I
found was "thief" or "robber." Is there another translation? Thanks.

Translation Link for "Ladro"

Why not the first wording of the Italians's National Anthem?

Fratelli d'Italia, l'Italia s'e' Desta..." (Italians' Brothers,
Italy's awake...??)
