Could be some tough times ahead for sure. Widespread economic collapse, profiteering, highly leveraged businesses going under, mass unemployment...... All kinds of possibilities.

What is the capability of the government to intervene and help. I'm guessing not in the same way as European governments are right now.
Typically not much left to loot after the sort of natural disasters occurring here!

Roughly speaking government spending here is only about 20% of GDP...Britain's in the high 30s% and will soon go much higher. The government here planned the biggest spending increases for education and infrastructure building this year. Their disaster reserves won't be nearly enough and the typhoon season is near. They certainly cannot get anywhere near the 80% payment promised to British workers laid off due to coronavirus closures. So few have got regular salaried employment anyway.

I am assuming food handouts from the Barangay will be about it. They are really needed as our experience in Paranaque is that many of the smaller markets have been closed. Otherwise the government will pressure some of the big corporations to help. But so far there are only announcements by some utility companies to be lenient with unpaid bills.

Manila always has the best air quality in Asia according to CNN air quality survey and normally better than Tokyo and Singapore.

I call "Fake News".
I suggest you look at the date of that bulletin. April 2019.

Went to buy emperadour today and was told that sales have been banned. I assume that applies to all hard liquor.

Guess that tells us something...

I have retrieved the statement from the State Dept....

US State Dept advisory. All Americans leave Manila and Cebu, says over 3-4 million Filipinos in the metropolis has only 3 days of cash left. Another 4-5 Million one week’s food. They do not wish to alarm but there is a potential for an increase in crimes for looting and violation of the quarantine. Philippine military and police must exercise good judgment. As the more serious immediate impact from the outbreak which is psychology will cause panic and desperation. The state department is advising the Philippine government to setup feeding centers and assistance centers for people who doesnt have the ability to last in this quarantine

That certainly isn't US State Department style language. They don't give government-to-government advice in public Travel Advisories. It would be done very privately or President Duterte would simply start ranting about US interference. This sounds very much like a fake post.

The State Department has not issued any Travel Advisory for the Philippines since 2019. But the US Embassy HAS issued a Health Advisory on March 17. 2020. It mentions nothing about about riots, food shortages, etc.

https://ph.usembassy.gov/health-aler...march-17-2020/

I've also looked through all the twitter announcements by the US Embassy in the Philippines. NADA, Nil, Zilch.

https://twitter.com/usembassyph?lang=en

Where's your link to these extreme claims?

I also looked for the post that you said was made by Mike1. I couldn't find it when looking through all his listed posts.

there has not been any such formal government advice by the US. Their grammar is way too superior for such low grade communication.

''The state department is advising the Philippine government to setup feeding centers and assistance centers for people who doesnt have the ability to last in this quarantine''

Without being a grammar ''nazi'' this is just too poor to be true!!

Phil11: "Sorry not now. I got it from an American friend but MikeK1 took a photo of it to pass on. Maybe he can provide the link. "

So where's the "photo" of "it"? Why just present your own "version" of this so-called "official" release...oh wait, it wasn't an official release...it was from a friend (that you trust implicitly") that got it from a friend.

You are just spreading fake news that could foment a panic. I suggest that you apologise, back away from the claim, and stop.

I saw your response that has no credibility at all. Suggest you re read my post re grammar and UX state department standards. There is a clear and obvious dichotomy.

"MANILA - The Philippine National Police on Friday warned purveyors of “fake news” of possible charges after false reports of massive looting in Manila went viral as the government imposed a month-long lockdown in Luzon.

PNP chief Gen. Archie Gamboa said he tasked the police force’s anti-cybercrime group to trace those spreading false information online.

“This is a warning to everybody because based on the Revised Penal Code, as amended on stiffer penalties under Republic Act No. 10951, you can be punished by disseminating, posting fake news so again we discourage people to do this,” Gamboa said during a televised press briefing.

“Hindi kayo nakakatulong, but the Philippine National Police will go after you, so huwag niyo kaming subukan at hahabulin namin kayo,” he said.

(You are not helping but the PNP will go after you so don’t try us because we will go after you.)
The police chief said the PNP would soon show an “example” on how purveyors of false information can face charges.

A text message that recently made rounds claimed that the Philippines was vulnerable to looting because the average Filipino family only had a week’s worth of savings. The message cited a supposed study by the US State Department.

Officers were also dispatched to areas where social media users claimed there were incidents of looting and found no such crimes there, said PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac".

To both Red ape and Mikemike. You can can believe what you wish. I have seen that statement from the PNP chief which was issued a few days ago. I suspect the information was passed on by those who were informed by the US embassy advising them to move because of the possible unrest. I personally can see that happening soon.

As far as MikeK1 is concerned only he can say what he did with the photo. Not me
