exactly. Even that french rubbish won't lose 1/2 of its value in the year and it will give you no maintenance bills either.

I'm driving a Renault Symbol at the moment . Plus points: it gets me from A to B, has an aux-in on the stereo, is lively if absolutely thrashed, will cruise at 120 clicks, is relatively comfortable, and its a hire car. Minus points: chassis feels like its made of cheese, no cupholders, feels breathless above 120, its flimsy and its French.

Why not hire a car for a month until you see how you get on and then decide. You will appreciate the need for a chunky car with a high safety rating more once you've driven in rush hour!

No offence, but I hope your job doesn't involve making timely decisions....

Option 1) Set a budget for an all in rate renting a Soft Roader, Lets say 2600 and ring around them asking for that deal.

Option 2) Buy something brand new for 50/60k. Look at the Renault Duster is my tip little bigger than a normal car, will have a warranty and keep it 2 years. The 2600 you would of used for rent will pay 2 year finance and then you have a car paid for to sell with hopefully sub 100k, Anything you get for it 20/25k is yours at the end. The above will work with small saloon.

Interesting thread - looking at the calculations they all have the interest charge for borrowing on there - what would your opinions be if you were offered an interest free loan? Does that then tip it more heavily toward buying?

Keep up that kind of logic and you'll open up your own car leasing business

I don't see how an interest free loan could possibly change the economics of the decision.

The Duster is what I meant when I said 301 on the previous page (brain not in gear) 49k for that car is amazing value.

use it for a year, pile on 50k highway miles and sell it for 25k to a springs school mum who will only put on 10k a year. 2k a month for a brand new car under warranty is great.
