Steel yourself. An acquaintance was hit by a car while cycling in Vancouver, resulting in a broken leg. He is just about at the stage of getting some sort of settlement, two years after the accident.

My ex-wife's claim took nearly 5 years to complete, after 4 she went to a lawyer, and he had it done and settled in about 6 months. They wouldn't budge from their original offer, and so lawyer filed a suit, a few days later, they settled, even after the lawyers cut, she received a substantial amount more then what was offered by ICBC as their best and final offer.

They don't give a rat's arse about you. The danger is if you just settle you may end up with long term complications from the accident and you won't have any recourse.
