In most cases the fences went up and people stopped caring as they dropped off the news

Opinion polls since Paris show 44% of Brits against refugees - as opposed to 39% from before. Not a huge increase considering and still a minority.

In the US it went from 46% to 48%. Also not a huge rise and still a minority.

Conversely, the figure in Canada is about a third and actually dropped.

Doesn't sound much like people having stopped caring.

I understand Guardian readers have raised in excess of £1.3m.

The biggest frustration I hear from people regarding refugees and foreign aid, is the money should used at home first to fix the poverty issues we have. Not so much against refugees, just against spending money overseas when people are in need at home and largely ignored.


Take BC for example, desperate need for affordable housing, but the province largely doesn't do much. And once outside of Vancouver, affordable housing through BC housing becomes almost non-existent.

The rental assistance program (provides assistance for those who don't have access to BC Housing) is only available to those with kids, leaving the rest of the poor out.

Disabled folks who use nearly all their 906/month on housing with nothing left for food and other necessities because the province says
375 per month is sufficient for housing.

The poor and poverty in Canada is largely ignored, and this does frustrate people. Poverty affects all races.

A classic (intentional) category error. Being anti-austerity policies imposed by the "elite" has nothing to do with being anti-refugee, which in turn has nothing to do with anti-immigration.

The audience is fickle.. things move on..
The interest in the news at the moment that's at all related to migrants is all the talk around EU Brexit & Cameron.. and they're more focused on the possible resignations in the Tory party if they're told which way to vote than anything about a few Syrians

I don't think it's the audience that's fickle, it's the media itself. They dish up what we consume.

the 'mob' is notoriously fickle and has been throughout history

and Media knows to survive it needs to sell advertising, and for that to sell, it needs topic's that will get audiences......

I have to say I am surprised this thread is still running.

I saw signage in Orangeville on the weekend, "Welcome Syrians". I wondered if Syrians landing in Orangeville knew how lucky they were not to be in Nunavut.

They try to take credit for everything in Orangeville.

They're probably not even hosting any refugees.

They'll live in Brampton and be driven in for civic events.

It's only out of date if it's been done again since.

However, you appear to have missed that rather important factor of what happened in between the two months referred to that might reasonably be expected to remove a lot of sympathy and it didn't.
Except opinion didn't change much and one of the three examples mentioned went the other way.

Have you watched any news in the UK or noticed what's filling the papers
Taken note of the conversations at Lunch time ?
or even taken notice of who's not made the radar screen of the Christmas charities begging on TV
... its dropped off the Radar here (UK)...............Nobody cares

I must admit I do soil myself looking at the mail sometimes. I can confirm that very popular UK newspaper along with all the readers who post comments are far from ignoring it.
