Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Bored and browsing through city archive blog at old photos from the past.
https://www.vancouverarchives.ca/wp-...VA-99-5167.jpg In 1918 a chicken sandwich was only 20 cents, which is apparently $3.08 today. |

Holy cow! White Lunch was a fancy place then. On E Hastings in the 70's, White Lunch had to drill holes in their teaspoons so the addicts wouldn't steal them or use them to cook up in the washrooms.

The photo has 806 Granville St, which looking at google street view, can't quite figure out exactly where it was. The old Payless store is 804 Granville, the pub at the corner is 800 and next to payless is 810, but 806 seems to no longer exist. But I guess it was somewhere in that region.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
CBC Radio presenter Paul Kennedy recently made his last Ideas show.
I heard a re-run last night and it reminded me of the way he signed off. I meant to mention it before as I thought it clever. He was speaking of a lesson he's learned. He then said, "actually it's two lessons or rules, really. The first is always, always, always leave your audience wanting more..." And then his usual sign off, "I'm Paul Kennedy" You think...wait, what about the second...and then you realise. |

Oh yes the old photo helps, silly me only used google street view looking for address but of course those can change over time. Does appear it was where the Aldo/Indigo stores were (I think the indigo has since shut down and I know payless has).
I like photos of old buildings that still exist to see what they looked like then vs now.

It appears to be the building where Indigo Spirit is on Google Earth, or the Aldo in this screenshot. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...b3befcbfc.jpeg Here's a blog from a local guy about one of the Hastings locations: I was only ever in the one across from Woodward's. https://ahamedia.ca/2009/04/01/redis...t-on-hastings/ |

In the street view shot of Indigo it's easier to see because they show the upper part of the building, and the distinctive roof line. I like trying to match up the modern view with old pics as well. In the other pics attached to the old street shot there are some nice ones of other parts of downtown too.
I have a book of then vs now for Las Vegas, its really interesting how much that city has changed over the last 100 years. In other news, this is happening in the Pacific Ocean, a huge raft of pumice stone. https://globalnews.ca/news/5813961/p...XMuBwXMd9HEatQ |

Reminds me of a documentary I saw once, middle of the deep ocean nowhere near land, then a floating pile of wood and kelp and all around that floating pile was life surrounded by an ocean desert. |

Indeed. Excellent material to disperse ocean life.

Pacific Ocean is also the oldest of the existing ocean basins. According to this link anyhow. https://www.livescience.com/32621-wh...est-ocean.html |
