Helped a young, blind man cross the main road yesterday, chatting he explained that he works as a volunteer giving psychological support to severely handicapped people at the local rehabilitation centre. Smashing chap!

Landlord with several properties in the area tried to slip in a clause to allow rent increase of inflation plus 7%. The province stepped in and told the landlord to remove said clause or risk fines of $5,000 per day.

Current rental increase is currently capped at 2.5% per year for existing tenants.

Which province was it where someone posted recently that the landlord gave spurious 'family' reasons for ending a tenancy and then moved someone else in at increased rent?

There was something about a landlord not being able to increase rent or only by the cap unless there was a new tenancy and that a tenancy couldn't be ended without a reason. Something like that.

In this province, reasons such as landlord's family use only need apply once a tenant has Tenure, after 5 years. Rents can be increased without limit after a tenancy has existed for a year.
Of course if that happens they risk losing a tenant and losing a month's rent is a bigger loss than any gain would be so it's not that likely.

I think it was Alberta but not 100% sure for that post.

I have no idea when rent control started in BC, but its been in place the entire 15 years I have been here, so I think its been around for quite a long time now the amount of the increase has varied over the years, since 2005 the largest allowed increase was 2012 at 4.3%, this year 2.5% was allowed.

We have not seen a rent increase since we moved into our unit in 2017 so have been lucky, but $1,750 isn't affordable either.

Here is BC rental info if your interested at all.

It's interesting seeing all the little and not so little differences. So many of them, taking Ontario in as well.

I didn't rent an apartment or house when I lived in Ontario, so never had to read up on their rules, I do think however they are the one where its pretty easy to have a pet at least compared to BC, its difficult here to find pet friendly rentals.

We've put our names down for a puppy. DH is going around singing 'We're getting a puppy'. The Bitch hasn't even been mated yet (one this week and one in two weeks). Super excited, hope our application gets accepted.

Jeez, couldn't they have protested without leaning on their horns constantly?

I don’t even have to look, because we have been in Vancouver the last couple of days. God the noise is dreadful, glad we are not staying in one of the hotels in question.

It was horrible indeed. I was not expecting it or the noise level it created.

If still in Vancouver and downtown Friday, there is some sort of climate strike protest which might create a mess.
