When you break down taxes and other deductions from pay, its crazy sometimes how many hours it takes in a 2 week pay period to just pay these......

Of the 59 hours I worked, 17.25 hours of wages goes to taxes CPP, EI, parking, and extended health. Kind of crazy in a way.

Granted some of that will come back in March in the form of a refund for the taxes.

How else do you expect government services to be paid for?

I never said a thing about not paying taxes, just found it interesting just how many hours of work it was.

Honestly its not that bad considering it would be almost as much in taxes in California and I would have to pay out of pocket at least a couple hundred extra a month on top for healthcare, at least here basic healthcare is included.

oh come on, basic healthcare? Major surgery, cardiac, neurological, vascular..... Expensive imagine equipment, etc, etc, etc,. What's available is hardly basic.

I am using basic as to get full healthcare in Canada you still need to pay for various medical services, dental, vision, physiotherapy, possibly prescriptions, mental health counselling/psychologist visits and so on.

I got the term from the Canadian government...... (one example below) and in the past BC has used the term basic as well but the province seems to use medically required now instead.

my apologies I see where you've got this from. Their interpretation of basic is rather different to mine, perhaps they mean fundamental? The Canada Health Act says that there should be reasonable access to "medically necessary hospital and physician services". Federal govt decides what that means and then each province can add other medical conditions.

No worries. I am not really sure how to always word things.

Several sick calls today. Someone at work threw a party for the cool kids and this morning several sick calls so today will be fun.......We already run a lean ship with minimum staff so sick calls really cause us to do a lot of work. Will be a long day.

Time for another occasional puzzle as to why people pay so much unnecessarily.

It's those weekly/monthly "affordable" payment purchases.

The latest flyer to arrive shows an HP 17" laptop. $99.99 monthly (18) or $25.99 weekly (78). $1799.82 monthly, $2027.22 weekly.
Madness. But maybe, just maybe, you absolutely have no alternative like borrow one, library etc but if you can afford those amounts maybe an internet cafe will suffice? Anyway...

Even if I'll never understand that, you can actually pay cash. $1399.88. A saving of $600.

On the other hand, trot along to BestBuy, Staples etc where you can buy HP 17" with more RAM, a bigger hard drive and a better processor for $734.49 (normally $854.49)

For folks who don't have good enough credit for traditional financing, lack cash to buy one outright and need one say for work or school, or lower income folks who don't have access to traditional financing. While I have not used such financing for computers, I can understand why some people may need to use them, same with payday loans which I have used in the past when there were no other options.

Costs more but sometimes one has no other options.
