Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I love watching videos taken from landing planes in San Diego, I miss those old days of flying in there almost every week in my late teens/early 20's. I took a flight somewhere about weekly between 1998 and 2004.
San Diego is the busiest single runway airport in the US, and 3rd in the world. On another topic, I applied to an airline again, I have done so every 6 months for I dunno 3 or 4 years now, never get anywhere, but I keep trying. I always see training groups for this airline when I am at work, so its clear they are hiring. |

have you applied to the a Trillium Drug benefit? I'll be looking at that once my husband retires as one of my meds is over 400, fortunately not for life and only every six months but it adds up. "The Trillium Drug Program is for people who spend approximately 3 to 4% or more of their after-tax household income on prescription-drug costs. However, if I get to 65 there might be ODBP.. https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-cove...rugs#section-5 |

12 hours of non-stop drilling, jack hammering or whatever the heck the commercial place downstairs is doing. 85 decibels inside the apartment all day long.
Nothing we or anyone else can do, the city permits commercial work from 7:30am to 8pm which is idiotic. Noisy work should be limited to 9am to 5p. Good thing I don't work tomorrow or I would be screwed by not getting any sleep. I see no way out of this hole, its not physically possible. Only reason we stay even remotely floating is because MIL helps from time to time, but each month we get deeper in the hole and unless I can manage to somehow get energy to work 20 hours a day, not sure what the solution is. |

You should set yourself up as a self-employed home aquarium cleaner/maintenance/tweaker/advisor. In a city the size of Vancouver there must be enough rich or lazy folks who like fish but not the hassle.

It's something I am looking into, been getting quotes for existing companies to try and see what the going rates are for various services. It might be something I'll end up doing, work in progress.
You've got 3 days off, you said? How's the progress on this going? |

You should get some earplugs, they are cheap and will reduce the level by 31dB. If your 85 dB is a reasonably accurate measurement you could contact the city as 8 hours at 85 can induce hearing loss. Wear the ear plugs, maybe headphones on top, go out if you can. How about a nap in the park? |

No, it won't work for me, unfortunately as I wouldn't qualify because it's based on HOUSEHOLD/ Individual income (which doesn't work well when you have financially co-dependent adults officially at the same address due to mortgages and things! even though apart from that both parties are financially independent) Thanks for the thought though! :)

It is not income tested. It also covers ambulance service and a few other extended health benefits. http://www.health.alberta.ca/service...s-seniors.html |

Wasn't that place north of where you are a possibility? I don't remember the name but there was a rail link IIRC so any loss of Greyhound might not be so bad.
We also still need to go and check these towns out as well, but again not something we can do at the moment. As far as I know the only train service in that town (Quesnel) is Rocky Mountaineer and it's a tourist train and not cheap and not year round, its not suitable for basic transportation. Now with Greyhound pulling out we have to reconsider places since we can't live remotely and not have access to other regions, and flying within BC is costly, and most smaller towns don't have full medical services so you need to be able to get within a region, but cars and gas inflate the cost of living, and with lower wages in these smaller towns, then inflated cost of living because of a car, add in rent, and well might not actually be better off in the end.

how did you measure that btw? Is it an app? I'd like to be able to measure sound levels sometimes. You should get some earplugs, they are cheap and will reduce the level by 31dB. How about a nap in the park? It's an app, seems to work well enough. I used it at work and the decibels it shows near a jet engine at idle is within what you would expect. I have an android so got it from google app store, its called sound analyzer App. I did end up using ear plugs, I buy them in bulk because of my job. Noise just annoys me more and more as I get older, could be hearing damage from years of working in high noise environments for so many years, even with hearing protection airport ramps are still noisy.

I have the going rates per hour and for various services the other companies are charging, now working on how much it would cost to start up with the basic supplies needed, and what services to offer, and how I can do it on my scooter, public transit or via car share service. Its a work in progress still, and my wife is helping me. She is the people person so would be in charge of getting customers and sales....lol

Do you not get issued with free earplugs/ear defenders?????!!!!!! I've worked in noisy environments and employers are terrified of hearing damage lawsuits so there are barrels full of earplugs in all lunchrooms etc.
Good to hear some positive action... good luck and keep working at it - I'll ask again next month ;) |

They provide these ear muffs from 3M but I leave them at home as I cannot stand wearing them, ears get too hot and sweaty and they are not comfortable to wear, find them too bulky.
Hearing aids aren't too comfortable either. |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
When you break down taxes and other deductions from pay, its crazy sometimes how many hours it takes in a 2 week pay period to just pay these......
Of the 59 hours I worked, 17.25 hours of wages goes to taxes CPP, EI, parking, and extended health. Kind of crazy in a way. Granted some of that will come back in March in the form of a refund for the taxes. |
