In the war between Devon and Cornwall it's 'uge, Devon cream goes on first then jam, Cornwall it's the other way round, and never the twain shall meet, except for the photos in the NT brochure in question where an employee got the wrong ones for the illustration. It's so bad that a number of people have removed their subscription. NEVER get into an argument about the 'proper' way with either a Devonian or Cornwallian.

Note to Telus. Calling people daily is not a way to get new customers, it's annoying.

If this is true, I hope United Airlines fires the flight attendant in question. No acceptable reason why a dog or live animal should be placed in an overhead compartment.

My missus had a result yesterday. She'd ordered some aluminium backsplash tiles from an outfit in BC. They were expensive (about $600). They arrived by courier yesterday. On opening the box, she noticed that they were damaged. All in the same place (corner) so the box had been dropped. The damage wasn't major; I wouldn't have even noticed it.

She called the company, which offered a replacement or a refund. She opted for a refund, which happened in minutes. Upon asking if the company would send someone to collect the damaged tiles, she was told to throw them in the trash.

The upshot is that we have fully usable tiles that cost us nothing.

That's almost as good as the experience with Home Depot several years ago. Custom-made and installed window shutters. They look really nice, particularly because HD somehow forgot to ask us for any money.

Or the supermarket clerk that didn't spot a 48-pack of beer in the cart. I only realised when we got home and I looked at the receipt. How do you miss something that big?

I bought a kitchen faucet online from Costco. I got a nice message from UPS telling me it had been delivered but it hadn't. Advised Costco who sent me another. Then the neighbour came round and said "I have a package for you". Told Costco to cancel the replacement shipment but no response. So now have two faucets. One of which I *should* take back I suppose.

It says something about retailers that they are so quick to write-off things.

One imagines that they build a certain amount of loss into their cost models. Either that or margins are such that they can easily afford to!

I would take it back to Costco. HD, not so much.

I fear that we shall be buying backsplash tiles from the internet as we've run out of patience with driving to tile shops in Ontario only to find that, beyond the car park full of greige minivan/SUV things, they all offer the same greige tiles. In one shop there were even customers, from Scotland, choosing between grey and grey as if, asked next week, they'd be able to tell what they'd chosen.

Yup. It's the same with racks of plants outside Walmart, with nobody watching over them. They look nice. Walmart knows they will be nicked and the loss is built into the model.

Stealing from WalMart is pretty shabby. People who do that deserve to have to live in a grey plastic box with a grey interior. Either a prison or a housing project.

Whereas WalMart simply rapes its suppliers. Its retail margins/markups are wafer-thin. The profit comes from the time lapse between buying stuff and then flogging it. It receives stuff and sells it long before it has to pay for it.

That is how large retailers make their money.
