And this is distinct from, say, watching 'live' CSI or Criminal Minds on CBS or CTV via gadget or smart TV? Or does stuff like that play just as well as if watching it on TV?

I know shows like that are easily streamed/downloaded but a couple in the household are still very much geared up to "Quantico is at 10.00 tonight" viewing habits, even though they are well used to watching plenty of downloaded stuff.

I guess the live sports is mostly subscription stuff and there's either some technical reason why sports channels don't 'play' so well or they "do something" to make it more difficult.

I know the bigger the footie game the worse is the picture on the computer stream (could just be that more are streaming it?) and sometimes everything looks good, but the moment the match kicks off the stream breaks and you struggle to find another half as good. It's like sabotage...which would be understandable

Same with live news. I've yet to find a way to watch the live news at 6pm/11pm without turning on the TV and tuning into CBC or CTV.
I can count the number of times I've turned on for TV news in the last few years on one hand. Boston, Paris and Nice.

I remember watching the UK riots on BBC News24 on the computer.

Or via FilmON, which also has BBC News (which I assume is what used to be News24)
... for us just getting a dose of normal news, then either what CBC et al cover at 6pm or what BBC News has on their channel is more than enough. (Plus I read the news multiple times a day at work.)
double

CBC radio morning and night, Guardian throughout the (24 hour) day and local newspaper for essential local stuff.

In the event of "an event" it would then be TV or BBC News via FilmON.

CBC Radio 1 or 2 for me if I listen to the radio. I don't listen much now as I have my spotify playlist on my phone and run it in the car via car speakers when in the car. NPR and/or BBC 3/4/5/6 at other times.

This is a good streaming link for games. It is a spinoff from Reddit which is one of the only social media formats I can stand.

There's an internet rebroadcast service as well, VMedia - VMedia | Internet & Cable TV Alternative Service Provider in Ontario. IPTV, Cable, DSL, FTTN, VoIP Home Phone Provider Toronto Canada - they have decent reviews (or did when we were looking 3ish years ago) but they were recently involved in a dispute with Bell Media and are no longer showing Bell channels - VMedia pulls Bell channels amid legal threat over Roku app - Business - CBC News
