my post #126 + Gozit post #131

Just got off the phone with Bell (they called me) - after my huge moan, the Bell rep apologizing & saying 'here is what we can do for you'

Fibre to the home (which I already have)

internet: DL 50 mbps, 350Ghz/mth usage, no cost wireless modem included

Home phone basic

TV package (their better package) which I checked on-line is about 120 TV channels

includes PVR receiver

$107/mth +tax, fixed price 2 years, no contract

I yawned & told them I would think about it

Rep went on with his 'well you have 7 days to accept'

I hung up

Shaw cable. I am posting a photo of the deal as it varies from province to province.

It's actually a bit cheaper for the first year, just shows you how much I pay attention to my bill!

For your deal in Kamloops, was the modem, installation & activation included for free?

The install was 100% DIY.

I already had a slower internet connection so the cabling was already there. They sent me a new modem in the post which I installed, then I called a free phone number and they activated it over the phone.

I used the same packaging to send the old modem back postage pre-paid. All in all it was a very painless upgrade and a rock solid connection.

No cable, just Netflix and an HD antenna in the attic, picks up the broadcasts from Toronto, Buffalo, Rochester, and Detroit. (Though Rochester and Detroit are iffy on really crappy weather days.)

Home phone we paid a $50 up front fee, no monthly fee. Unlimited Canada calling, and very discounted international calling (1c/min to US and UK landlines).
Who do you have the home phone with? That's an amazing deal!

Bundle of three from BellAliant, currently mid 3 year deal.
Internet unlimited, 100/50. Two major streamers/downloaders in the house, brilliant service.
Landline.
TV - not skinny but haven't found cheaper way of including Sportsnet and TSN and extra two boxes. Not HD.
Prices include one box only and show current promo price/real price.

Total $109 - at end of promo = $161 ($109/$161)

TV and Internet only would be $104/$144 so phone cost is $5/$17

TV & Phone only would be $120/$130 so internet is free/$31

Internet & phone only would be $116/$126 so TV is free/$35

Hard to replace the phone for $5 or $17.
Couldn't replace the internet for free or only $31
Couldn't replace the TV for free or only $35

Could ditch TV but the others in the house still watch some live TV and most of my football is on TV. I do stream some footie but unless it comes from BBC/ITV via FilmOn, it can be hit or miss as to whether it's actually watchable.

At the end of the 3 years promo I'll still be paying quite a bit less than when we had BellAliant for phone/internet and Shaw for TV.

I will, however, look again but I am waiting to be convinced that a TV and Roku/Chromecast/Apple etc or Smart TV is more reliable than streaming football via computer.

For those who swear by the various gadgets or smart TVs do you get TSN, Sportsnet, SportsnetWorld, BeIn, NBC and NBCSN and if you do watch football by these means is the picture of TV quality/sound in synch/no freezes/no sudden loss of broadcast etc etc

It's a VOIP service, so it is internet-dependent. It comes with a little modem box thing. You plug one cord from your internet modem into the phone modem, and then a normal phone from the phone modem to the phone unit, and that's it. It cost $50 to set up, and there's no monthly fee, just a pay-per-use fee for international calling. We haven't had any issues with clarity, noise on the line, connections being down, etc. 911 service still works. (And I can personally vouch for that as I had to call it last year. No issues at all, it connected and they had my home address from the call.)

No idea on the bandwidth, though. We don't use it often... occasionally I call my parents, but those are often short phone calls as they live nearby so I'm often only calling to ask something quick, or my husband calls his parents, again usually quick as it's often just arranging Skype. We have 300GB per month with TekSavvy, and we stream and download a decent amount. I think we only once have even gotten the 50% warning from TekSavvy, so since we never are anywhere near our cap, we've never even checked to see how much bandwidth the phone uses.

We did buy a small generator so that if there's a power outage we can keep the internet - and thus, the phone - up and running. I think the generator has a 3h battery or something... but it means that we don't lose our phone just in case there's a power outage. Yes we have cell phones, but still, just nice to have that option as well.

In our house we've come to much the same observations as you.

Re streaming - my opinion is it is good for anything except live sports. Everyone we know who has fully cut cable says their android boxes or whatever are awesome except for the live stuff. If you want to watch the leafs game the next day, it will be there in full HD amazing quality. But if you want to watch as it happens, forget it.

Same with live news. I've yet to find a way to watch the live news at 6pm/11pm without turning on the TV and tuning into CBC or CTV.

Don't think you're gonna get much better than that for all 3 services. If that's what you're in the market for i'd take it.

Re: live news - when we want to watch normal live news and it's not 6pm or 11pm we just put on BBC News, which we get through iPlayer. It works well enough, covers the main things.

My parents are staying with us for a week and my mom is a complete MSNBC and CNN addict, since she follows all the Trump stuff incredibly closely. Those two channels are on ALL THE TIME at their place... but we don't get either channel because we only have the antenna. But for us just getting a dose of normal news, then either what CBC et al cover at 6pm or what BBC News has on their channel is more than enough. (Plus I read the news multiple times a day at work.)

When the rep offered that deal, I also asked what the price would be without the TV service for just the home phone & internet - it was $90/mth + tax

On the next call I want to see what the 'internet' only price will be for a 2 year term fixed price, modem included, no contract
