Accused caught with marijuana at court faces extra charge - Local - The News

"John Francis Earl was visiting the court house in December to answer to charges of trafficking marijuana and possession of unstamped tobacco when sheriffs asked him, along with everyone entering the courthouse that day, to empty their pockets and walk through a screening device.

In doing so, he pulled out two marijuana buds, wrapped in foil and equalling more than two grams, out of one of his coat pockets. He was arrested at the courthouse and a new charge of possession was added to the court docket."

Family of five homeless from fire and it will take two months to fix up before they can move back.

Insurance company were to put them up in a hotel - on different floors but one has a disability and needs care not really available in a hotel. Not sure exactly why, but never mind.

Word gets out and a couple offers their home for the rest of summer - complete with wheelchair ramp - and they'll stay at their cottage instead.

From the Penticton Herald Extra:
The First King of Scotland
In his first time in Penticton, Scotsman Johnny Lee Memphis took top Honours at the 14th annual Penticton Pacific Northwest Elvis festival on Sunday.
The Elvis tribute artist from Coalsnaugton, Scotland was the top professional in the contest, earning a spot in the Ultimate Elvis championships in Memphis, Tenn. in August.
Corny Rempel from Steinbach, Man., was second and Bruce Stewart of Georgian Bay, Ont. third.
Fred Steen from Chetwynd was the top non-professional. Christopher Blaine from Penticton was second in the category and Silvio Fontaine of Whitewood, Sask. placed third.
The three day event featured 16 tribute artists as well as multiple performances by headliner Donny Edwards and an appearance by Cynthia Pepper, Presley's co-star in the movie "Kissin' Cousins."
For next year's 15th anniversary it was announced that three former winners will return to serve as co-headliners, each representing a different era in Presley's career.

Directly below the article is the ad for the Penticton Scottish Festival this coming Saturday, which might be a hoot, mon.

Moncton wins praise from UK's Guardian

Friendliest Venue: Moncton

Vancouver was more beautiful, Montreal more chic, Ottawa more interesting and Edmonton – well Edmonton had more tall buildings – but Moncton in New Brunswick was the most charming venue of Canada 2015. Virtually everyone, everywhere, was friendly but in Moncton people are super friendly. If drivers see you hesitating on the pavement (sorry, sidewalk) and think you might want to cross the road, they stop for you. It also had by far the best newspaper of any read at breakfast in the five cities I visited – so hats off to the Times and Transcript.
T&T also quoted from BBC article

Kindness of Canadians
When you arrive in Moncton, population 64,000, on Canada's east coast, and are told that you will be getting a free upgrade on your hire car, the first thought is "what's the catch?" No catch, just a typical example of the friendliness on offer from people who populate this huge country.

I was intrigued by the name.

On wiki it says this
Swift Current (Assiniboine: Miníȟaȟa) is a small city in southwest Saskatchewan.
I was further intrigued by the Assiniboine part (never averse to a smutty laugh) so I clicked on that and found this
The Assiniboine language (also Assiniboin, Hohe, or Nakota, Nakoda or Nakona) is a Nakotan Siouan language of the Northern Plains, spoken as a first tongue by around 150 Assiniboine people, most of them elderly. The name Asiniibwaan is an Ojibwe term meaning "Stone Siouans".
It's obviously the pot growing there.

I'm cheating by including this but...

Mix-up means Moncton gets ‘rockgrass’ concert, not AC/DC
Moncton — A telephone mix-up has left thousands of New Brunswick’s hard-rock fans disappointed, and dozens of bluegrass fans happy, with news that this summer’s Magnetic Hill mega-concert will feature cover band Hayseed Dixie instead of AC/DC.

When first announced, promoters said the Sept. 5 concert would feature hard-rock legends AC/DC as headliners, bringing the band back to Moncton in a repeat of their 2009 visit. However, it turns out the telephone negotiations were conducted by a hearing-impaired executive, who was actually negotiating with the management of Hayseed Dixie, a band best known for their bluegrass-flavoured covers of hard-rock anthems.

“I thought they came cheap,” said Mayor George LeBlanc. “I’m sure the notoriously hard-rocking music fans of Moncton will be disappointed, but it’s not all bad news — considering New Brunswick’s aging population, surely all those folks who love old-time music will flock to Magnetic Hill to kick up their heels.

“When you consider Hayseed Dixie’s classic take on new songs, this concert really has something to offer everyone, not just the narrow segment of the population that listens to C103 FM.”

Hayseed Dixie certainly does have a diverse catalogue; a quick search through YouTube shows they cover not just AC/DC as their name suggest, but also such hits as Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On a Prayer” and Scissor Sisters’ “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing.”

However, that’s not enough for classic rock fans, who were looking forward to once more catching Angus Young and the rest of his band in Moncton.

“It’s a total ripoff,” said Steve Ramsay of Penobsquis. “I wanna rock hard, not frolic around like some barn-dancing idiot while some hick strums a banjo.”

Mayor LeBlanc said that while this was “a bit of a screw-up,” Moncton’s city council would be keeping a close eye on the concert’s performance.

“If Hayseed Dixie doesn’t sell out, no biggie,” said LeBlanc. “Honestly, we saved so much money by not actually signing AC/DC, we can afford to not sell tickets.”

But if the concert is a smash success, it could point a path for future summer events in the Hub City.

“Hayseed Dixie isn’t the only bluegrass cover band out there,” said LeBlanc. “There’s The Cleverlys, The Gourds — all these groups work for cheap, and have something to offer any New Brunswick music fan, except for those elitists who listen to CBC Radio 2 on the weekends, when they play that opera music. We’re never, ever getting anything like that for Magnetic Hill.”

Not especially local to here, nor even particularly recent, but this made the "important stories you may have missed" column in the Oldie (due thanks to my mum for continuing the subscription my dad took out for me as a joke a few years ago - it's quite a good read, actually):

A farm hand called Nicky Bacon was not taken seriously by police when she called to report that a pig had been stolen. Two police officers even turned up at her house to check that she was genuine and that really was her name.

All ended well, though - a facebook campaign resulted in the piglet being located and returned to its rightful owners. David Cameron did not comment.
