it stands to reason these financial institutions would flee

So Lloyds and RBS might conclude - as Standard Life has indicated to me that it might - that it would be more efficient to move the whole shebang to London.

I've just moved my Standard Life personal pension to an RRSP. I was originally not going to bother but all this talk of Scotland walking away from its share of the UK national debt has made me pretty worried about what sort of place it would be post-independence so I thought I might as well go ahead and do it. It took them several weeks to produce the relevant documentation and, when I rang them up to complain, I was told that they were very busy right now due to handling more transfers than usual. I'm guessing that all of the big Scottish financial firms are having their hands forced by defecting customers.

The scots dont vote for SNP at UK elections because its basically a vote for the tories .

But there is plenty the Scottish government can do about "welfare reforms, stagnant wages, rising utility bills, higher living costs and job insecurity". Also "Set against the background of 155,100 households on council waiting lists and nearly 40,000 homelessness applications last year"

Then you read the Scottish Government site and you see stuff like:

Devolved issues include:
health
education and training
local government
social work
housing
planning
tourism, economic development and financial assistance to industry

Seems a tad convenient to just blame it all on the UK govt.

The Scottish governement has made improvements but as I said have no control over the welfare system. The sad fact is Scotland always has had poverty ,far back as I can remember.I remember old people dying of hypothermia in their homes because it was choice between eating or heating.

Poverty and Welfare aren't synonymous terms.

If poverty is reasonably defined as 60% of median salary then what is the high pay equivalent? One would have thought that the progressive ethical approach would be for SNP MPs and ministers to set an example and forego the excessive element of their salaries. Anything above say 40% above median salary. Obviously they're not in it for the money but just to make Scotland a better place for all.

The annual salary for an MSP is currently £58,097.

The annual salary for an MSP who holds a dual mandate is £19,366.

The total annual salaries for officeholders (including their MSP salary) are:

o First Minister: £142,257
o Cabinet Secretary: £101,757
o Minister: £85,445
o Presiding Officer: £101,757
o Deputy Presiding Officer: £85,445
o Lord Advocate: £115,135
o Solicitor General for Scotland: £99,343

Maybe it's not the national govt. salaries that are the biggest issue..

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-Minister.html

The largest remuneration package in Scotland was received by Linda Hardie, executive director of South Lanarkshire Council who received £543,538.

Glasgow, home to some of Scotland's poorest residents, also has the highest number of employees with packages worth more than £100,000: some 27 workers there are on six figures.

John Sharkey, chief Executive of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, a company almost entirely owned by Glasgow City Council, received £314,553. This included a bonus for having a tough year.

Orkney, with its tiny population of 20,000, managed to pay one official £339,610.
