I would disagree that Bhuddism is a religion (more a philosophical code). I didn't assert "violent" I said they were not peaceful, and their history, past and present demonstrates that.

A mate of mine quit the corporate world 7 years ago and became a Budhist monk. He sold all his possessions and lives in a retreat in South London. He has a fancy name, wears red gowns and everything.

I recall that episode. Where Buddhist monks attack it is often driven by political considerations. In many Buddhist countries young men are obliged to do a stint in the monasteries and are not necessarily devout Buddhists. I think the difference is in the scripture. Unlike Islamic scripture which dictates murder, rape, vengeance (as well as the much publicised peace and love) Buddhist teachings are almost wholly non-violent. An interesting point of note is that China was able to annexe Tibet with only minimal violent confrontation from the devout Buddhist population. Compare with Afghanistan. If the whole world were Buddhist, we would have far less suffering.

I suspect that's more about a monarchial system that fears overthrow so uses blasphemy laws as means to suppress any opposition to its rule. It still stinks.
