Yes. The phrase in the article "The family from Blackburn..." is kind of a giveaway...

Somehow I missed that bit when I originally read the article..............was distracted by the visions of loveliness depicted in the photo accompanying the article

I personally know a family like this in Tameside, Gtr Manchester. The guy was quite a "normal" young lad, but his father was extremely overweight, and he saw how his father manipluated the system. I can actually remember him saying that he was going to get married and have "loads of kids" so he could get as much money as possible from the government. This he did, marrying an equally large girl and fathering, the last time I saw him, four kids; neither he nor his wife work, and haven't for years. They are classed as "disabled" due to their weight, and as such get a FREE car plus all the benefits they can claim! This is all self-inflicted simply so they don't have to work...and the rest of us pick up the tab. Oh - and they go to Florida at least once a year! So, the family in the newspaper article is, sadly, not an isolated case.

I remember my b-i-l saying, years ago, he used to support two families....his own, and the one he was paying for out of his taxes etc. How true!

I am not going to defend them - no way! But I will say this, when your on a limited budget then when your shopping you tend to look for the buy one get ones, the meal for 5 quid things from iceland - rarely do those things include veggies and salad and healthy choices, it's always fish fingers or turkey rolls.

For 6-12 months of my life I was on a really tight budget, I was a single non working parent to a toddler. After my essential bills - gas, water, leccy, phone and car payments of 50 quid a month I had less than 10 pounds to do my weekly shop, so if I didn't get something free, I didn't buy it. The big shop happened when the 40 pounds child benefit came in each month, if toddler didn't need clothes or shoes, then that extra would either be saved or spent on meat and fruit and veg treats. It used to break my heart when the ice cream man came round and I'd get asked if I had 50p for a ice cream - usually no. Things got worse buy about 5 pounds a month when I went back to work - after the campain 'Be better off working!'.

So when I see perfectly capable people that are too lazy to support themselves complaining about how little they get from the government I get a little annoyed!:curse:

These people are the backbone of modern Britain. What right do you have to tell people how to live their lives. These fine people, whose boots you are not worthy to kiss, are one of only a few gifted people whose metabolisms are so efficient that they can be sated by only one bucket of chips and a gallon of lager.
Indeed, in the event of a disaster when the likes of you Southerners are dying off because of some coming Ciabatta and Beaujolais Nouveau famine these fine citizens and those like them will the only ones most likely to survive, repopulating the earth with offspring posessing of strong, massive bodies, vaguely alarming faces, predilections for petty crime and vast flat screen TVs.
So rejoice, Britain! For it is surely a mark of how far we have come that we as a civilized society can tolerate, nay NURTURE these fine citizens and everything they believe in. In Tibet for example, the Buddhist monks are supported by the charity of others because their society understands that their spiritual contribution far outweighs any petty materialist claim. Likewise we must see the big picture here. These people and the thousands like them are in many ways Britain's buddhist monks. Except they eat and shag a bit more.

I have to say that I personally think it depends on the kids, my OHs mum is 5 foot and at one point weighed 20 odd stone, she hasnt worked for over 20 years, her brothers and sisters are split 50 50 as to Claiming benifits and not working. my OH and his half Brothers and sisters are different in the respect that 2 of them work really hard, pay taxes, have a life that they feel is respectful and lived to the full. His brother at 26 has gone back to school and although planting his seed all over the place he is looking after them and trying to better himself, the last sister has a million kids and is living off of the state. It may be a rarity but not everyone is happy with the circle that their families drag them into, often it only takes one of them to say its not the life for them and the others will follow once they can see the benifits!

Probably should say he was raised in Sholver, Oldham........
