Hi SushiFan,

I was a bit stunned when I read you couldn't find vegetables to eat in Penang restaurants. As BB says, there's plenty here! Often vegetables are served as a separate dish, so if you want some it's a side order, just ask what they have - and try something you've never had before, there's some delicious surprises.

JC3, thank you. I will try again, next time when I'm in Penang. We did see quite a variety of vegetables in the super markets so we were already surprised to see so little in the restaurants.

Golden River is a great place to eat isn't it. Great food.

I've never tried the Gurney hawker centre but I've heard folks say it's not that great. Maybe try Viva foodcourt next time. That's on border of Tg Tokong and Tg Bungah. Have a go at the Yong Tau Foo then you can pick out all the veggie bits you like.

We've been to Gurney a few times but not for many years.
The missus got on tv there when a Singapore channel was looking at food in Penang.
Gurney used to be crowded with locals usually a good sign but the food wasn't to our taste.
Mind you Viva wasn't that great either, but it's all down to individual taste.

Thank you for your tip bakedbean. I haven’t been to Viva. I will give it a try on a next occasion.

I admit: I did go to the Japanese restaurant in Paragon the other week. But I went for grilled fish (saba on this occasion), not for sushi. It tasted good.

I admit to being a Sakae Sushi fan - I never had sushi before coming to Penang because, to be honest, I found it too expensive for what it is - happily that's not the case in Penang.

Is that the one at Straits Quay? I heard that the one at SQ doesn't use MSG. I haven't the foggiest with Japanese food. It's something I want to try out but need a bit of instruction. And I am chopstick challenged too

They are everywhere including the Tesco next to SQ and they don't use MSG at all (but then neither does Volkswagen )

That is an invalid excuse. What many people don't know is that it is common in Japan to eat sushi with your fingers. Which explains why they give you a wet towel to clean your hands before and during your meal.

What is meant by MSG?
