Not a very nice way to speak about our Australian friends

I dunno.....looks like local green beans to me. What I used to call French beans in a previous incarnation. Oh for some runner beans eh.

Penang food is so cheap, my life. Was over at Prima Tanjung in Tanjung Tokong this morning to do a few things, and thought I'd go take a look at The Old City Foodcourt which is at ground level-ish within Prima Tanjung. This used to be called Mangrove, if my memory serves me well.

It was 11.30am and really bustling in there. A few new food stalls have popped up since I last went in there.

The small Nasi Lemak stall was heaving with customers so I got tempted with a takeaway. 6 ringgits That's just over a quid in old money. Not bad eh? Pic below.

I luv nasi lemak.

Was that rice Lemak, bb??

And the ingredients?
Ikan bilis and peanuts in a sambal sauce with long beans.

Normally I'd have a chicken leg, a fried egg, some cucumber and even fried spam(lovely that) perhaps even selar kuning. The ikkan bilis and peanut mix would be a quarter of that amount even though I like it and there'd be some dark sweetish spicy sambal as well.

But nasi lemak is supposed to be a choice of ingredients to go with the lemak rice so nothing wrong with your choice. Mine would cost twice your amounts, mind.

Yep, coconut rice.

I haven't actually ate it yet. Bought it for my dinner tonight and bunged it in the fridge. Will give it a nuke in the microwave later.

Yes, ikan bilis and some kind of nuts (are they peanuts those small ones?) and green beans. There's actually some beans hidden under the ikan bilis. I haven't totally pigged out on ikan bilis.....honest.

I've actually got a slight intolerance to peanuts so it's a bit naughty if that is what they are. Ah well, if I keel over tonight, it was nice knowing you ex-Reg.

I'm really stuck on Kafe Tanjung for takeaways at the moment. It's a couple of doors down from KK Ong the dentist in Tg Tokong. Probably a joke there somewhere.

It's a Nyonya economy rice place. Always seems to be heaving with locals both eating in and taking out. Somewhat more expensive than most takeaways but really nice food. Had some very tasty pork in ginger and soy sauce t'other day.

I was having a little stroll around Straits Quay this morning admiring the boats, and spotted a sign up Opening soon.....Seafood oyster bar called, I think, The Crab and Lobster. It's two doors along from Healy Macs. Sounds interesting. Just imagining a plate of crab and a glug of Sauvignon Blanc...mmmmm.

I see that The Library has closed up, or changed name perhaps.

I recently ate with friends at the Vintage Bulgaria restaurant in Tanjong Bungah (it's actually right next door to Ingolf's). It's the 3rd time I've been there and the food is excellent. This time around I shared a crown of ribs (plenty for 2) which, if memory serves me right was RM86. A good old fashioned American style cheesecake rounded off my meal. The others were very happy with their fare too.

I believe you can bring your own wine for a reasonable corkage fee, which I must remember to do next time - a sturdy red would be perfect.

The staff are friendly and efficient, as is the air conditioning which fortunately they sorted out before we got too cold!

Here’s some great recommendations from Datin Karen H'ng (the co-founder of Macalister Mansion) for Nyonya food, Nonya Kuih, char koay teow, laksa, satay, baked crab and coffee in Penang.

Society Picks: Datin Karen H'ng's favourite Penang food spots | Feature | MY Tatler

That’s next week sorted!

iirc because we haven't been to Penang for 3 or4 years there's a mini mart a few doors along which sells some nice wines.

One thing my wife and I missed in the Penang food is vegetables. All dishes mainly consist of rice and meat, and hardly any vegetables. We did study the menu's in the food courts and looked around at the hawker stalls but could not find it.

I don't know where you are eating, but there's plenty of vegetable dishes and combinations of veggies and noodles and so forth. And plenty of vegetarian restaurants too. I have several vegetarian friends here and they certainly don't go hungry.

Which food court did you go to?

Have you tried Assam Laksa (Penang Laksa)?

I am not a big fan of noodles as I try to keep my daily carbs intake under control. We strolled around the hawkers near Gurney Plaza and visited the food courts at Gurney Plaza and Paragon. Also looked at menu's from various other restaurants. We felt that the amount of vegetables in the dishes was small, much smaller than we use to eat. One great exception is a small Chinese outside restaurant in Batu Ferringghi, called Golden River. Maybe we should have looked for more Chinese restaurants in George Town and Tj. Tokong area.
