Re: Student Visa - Medicals
You really must make sure it is CRICOS registered. That is part of the condition for the student visa, and I'm pretty sure that if you are both doing courses more than 3 months long you need a student visa each.
There is a cricos website, I'm sure if you google you will find it.
Good luck

Re: Student Visa - Medicals
hi bradburns,
not sure if its a CRICOS registed course
The information i've got is that its with a trade training centre called silver trowel. Their website is silvertrowel.com.au. they specialise in training migrants on the student visa. They have centres in cannington (perth), geraldton, bunbury and kalgoorlie WA and so i've been told they have partnerships with local employers that provide on the job training and work placements with the chance of being taken on full time when you have completed the course

Hi Perksy,
Thanks for that information, i wasn't told that. I am going to ring study options tomorrow though, because we didn't even know that Perth was an option and we've already been to Perth and loved it.
Thanks

Re: Student Visa - Medicals
We have finally exchanged!!! The dog is at the shippers, she flys tomorrow.
We have just managed to book flights, which was pretty hard as most of the flights to Adelaide had been booked up and were over £1500 each.
So we are flying to London, then to Hong Kong, and have a day there, then fly to Melbourne, and then onto Adelaide.
We get there on the afternoon of the Saturday, and I start my course 9am Monday morning!!! I have falled asleep in class before after travelling 3 hours from Manchester the day before so it could get embarrising!!

We fly out on the 6th feb, my nursing degree starts on the 18th, don't know if the house will have completed in time but we are lucky as we are selling to friends so hopefully we can fly off and know its all gonna work out ok!
Dreading the flights (grits teeth) as we have four kids age 8.6.4.and 20 months. Got to remember its only 24 hours, aaaaahhhhhh. Can't wait really, we have put in some applications online for some awesome houses to rent so we can set it up before we get there sooo excited

Re: Student Visa - Medicals
Hi Southern stars,
What qualifications do you need to do a Degree in Australia? Is it pretty much the same as in the UK, either A levels or an access to health certificate?
The reason i ask this, is because eventually i want to study to become a midwife and was enrolled on an access to health course to do before going on to a Degree in Midwifery.
We are moving to the Sunshine Coast, hopefully in May/June 2008, as hubby's registered onto a Bricklaying course. If we get pr then this is definitly something i want to do.
Sorry for all the questions,
Thanks,
Lisa

Re: Student Visa - Medicals
Hello Lisa,
Yes it is quite similar I was concerned before I applied that my qualifications wouldn't be recognised, fortunately although I didn't have very good A levels I have done a few years of the OU so had that under my belt for the application.
I would also like to be a midwife but decided to get the nursing career secured first.
We are going to Tassie and I must admit that we chose to do the student visa route with nursing as if you do well in the degree it is one of few careers on this path which is very likely to secure pr.
Best of luck Julie

Hi Julie,
Good luck to you with your course, i hope it is everything you hoped it would be.
Thank you for your reply. I unfortunately don't have A levels.
Do you know whether there is an australian equivilent of either A level study or any sort of access course that would allow me to study before i do the midwifery degree?
Thanks, Lisa

Hello there, you can enter via private Vocational or State TAFE system i.e. FE, as a mature candidate (quals not absolutely necessary), then after one year or two depending upon articulation, transfer over to 2nd year university.
Any questions just PM me. Cheers Andrew

Bet u guys are sooo excited!!
Good luck with it all specially the flight with the kiddiewinks, tho am sure you'll all be fine, have u got a nite time flight? Our 2 (2years n 16 months) slept most of both the flights. Oldest watched Dora bout 20 times n the constant food that the they brought passed the time too. It really wasn't that bad.
It was pretty hard going for us all the first few days with jet lag n gettin used to the heat. The kiddiewinks took bout 7 -10 days to get back to their wee selves, tho oldest came out with chicken pox on our 4th day here!!
Anyway take care
Cheers

hiya no we take off at lunchtime and then our stop for refuelling at hong kong will be in the middle of our night (hong kongs morning) and then i reckon the kids will sleep for the second flight which gets us to melbourne for kids morning but melbournes evening, we then haveto wait overnight in melb airport for our connecting flight to tassie!!! so when we arrive in launceston in the morning i reckon all the kids not to mention usadults will be completely zonked!!
Still it'll be worth it and we don 't intend coming back too soon!

Re: Student Visa - Medicals
Hi everyone!
Have just read all your posts, all 34 pages!
We (me and hubby and 2 kids) are looking at the student visa route. Originally were looking at the business 163 but can't quite make the turnover unfortunately. So our only option is the student route.
However we're swaying from one thing to another! Hubby doesn't mind doing the bricklaying but there have been some concerns that it won't fulfill the 900 hr work experiance and that you would need the bridging visa - which is all money and extra school fees! Whereas the hairdressing has the 900hrs almost built in ( i understand that the dima requirement is 900hrs on top of the study but this can be incorporated) am i right in thinking that hairdressing would then be the cheaper and 'easier' option - if I dare say 'easier'!!!! lol
What would be the other options which would more likey get PR?
i quite fancy midwifery but i believe that's a whole other ball game. Much longer and more expensive? Not sure how it works
any info please?

Hi,
We are currently following the student visa route.
My hubby is registered onto the bricklaying course at Nambour tafe, Sunshine Coast to start in July this year.
I can understand why you are swaying towards doing the hairdressers course, because the work experience seems to be easier to come by (from the posts i've read anyway), but i have heard and read a few nightmare stories about the hairdressing courses, but then again I have about the Bricklaying course aswell.
Both occupations are in Demand at the moment so it's a hard choice, why don't you decide which career will give the best prospects for your family.
Also, I hope to eventually train as a Midwife, if we gain permanent residency.
It becomes a lot cheaper to study once you become a permanant resident, so that's what i'm hoping to do.
We're hoping, that we'll be able to find jobs, doing whatever it takes until hubby has finished his course, because any money is better than none, then apply for pr and then i will look properly into midwifery.
If there's anything else you need to know and i can help, let me know.
There are a couple on here who post under PaulandNick, Paul has just completed the hairdressing course and they are now awaiting a decision from dimia re pr. Why don't you find him on here and ask him a bit about the course.
Keep us informed of what you decide to do.
Good luck, hope you come to a decision soon, All the best.
