See for the police check and the two proofs of address it asks for - what did people submit for that? I have a bank statement but all the bills etc are in my flatmate's name. I've got a letter from an insurance company but my name's spelt incorrectly, will this matter at all?

The fact that most of yours have expired is putting me off even more sending it off beforehand.

By the way, if you have stayed away from the UK for more than 6 months, do you also need a police certificate from the country you were in? The country I was in was a shithole, I have no idea how I can get a police certificate from there, not even sure if they will provide me one.

You can check on cic how you can get a police certificate for that country

OK but I already have a police certificate from the UK and I have only stayed in that country (Dominican Republic) for 7 months. Do I have to get a police certificate from there?

To be fair 7 months in Dominican Republic. Canada will be easy for you. Do try and search the forum before posting questions or Google cic canada for instance if someone says something you don't understand. No need for 4 of you to mock him for it
