....... I was just pointing out the double standard and the complete failure to set an example on the part of people who then stand up in front of podiums and go on about "broken society" and "robust policing" when it's directed only at one sector of society, not at themselves.
The majority of politicians do not set a bad example in a lawful and elected and democratic society and the majority of politicians do not take part in all the things they are against regarding the looters.
This means the majority of elected politicians have the right to state what is, and what is not, acceptable social behaviour. What's wrong with that
I might not agree with a lot of what they represent but social and moral standing and how people should live together and social responsibilities are a good thing are they not
It seems to me the very fact some politicians are very poor examples gives some people the reason to discount ALL that they have to say on the strength of it. I may not agree with the agenda's of all elected politicians (in whichever country) however as elected representatives of those countries they (in the majority) have the legal (and moral) right to re-enforce the social standing of said country.
....... Rhetoric is a dangerous thing. I understand that people get angry - so do I. Some people in the Barbie, in this thread, and in others around the board sometimes appear to speak without thinking - Amazulu calling for "deleting" people, PP and I think Spartacus calling for the Army to come in and shoot them, Bix calling for castration of rioters, and our friend Slapphead insisting that it's the dark-skinned people who are the trouble and because they are dark-skinned, and I forget who/where insisting that he could tell on sight that the rioters weren't "English". Might have been Creature. Anyway, you add that all up and it creates, well, a certain impression. My dislike of these attitudes in no way means that I do like people setting fire to stuff and hitting people over the head - two entirely separate things..
How many times have people on all forums spoken *out of term* about many things, yet we don't always take it literally or to heart besides often what they say and what we read isn't always an accurate assessment of the person as a whole.
At the end of the day everyone has an opinion and who am I (we) to say they are wrong? If I (we) feel so passionatly about something why shouldn't they? Surely the way to change people is to talk it through, try changing their views or just accept that sometimes people have to agree to disagree.
oh heck....we're agreeing again Sista

Why are politicians saying these things a "complete failure"?
The majority of politicians do not set a bad example in a lawful and elected and democratic society and the majority of politicians do not take part in all the things they are against regarding the looters.

All politicians want to remain in power and everything they say and do every day is based on that premise. I don't see what their comments on the countries social standing has to do with what is, in essence their job. Again, the fact some pollys are wrong doers doesn't mean the majority of politicians who try to do the right thing, should be ignored. Again two wrongs don't make a right.....
I can't speak for anyone else but what I can say is often people vent their spleen on BE and freely express their feelings without having to sanatise what they are saying. This applies to ALL areas of BE and to the largest majority of us (including me and you) and not just the Barbie!

Agree however people need to take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming their social background or cite racism at every opportunity. And just because a minority of pollys are corrupt or have a corrupt agenda or we don't like everything they represent, we need to trust that the majority of elected members in the main want what's best for everyone, majority and minority and support these sentiments..

Now I'm running to work - more later. Really do appreciate the thought-out response though. More when I'm done earning a living for the day.

Thanks Sonlymewalter (Sorry) that is just what I have been trying to get over on this thread, but it has been taken the wrong way.

Have your say Noni, I for one would like to know what you really think. At least then posters won't make wrong allegations.

I think these "English Riots" have affected a lot of us who live here..... especially if those we know and love have actually suffered loss or injury during them and the following copy-cat actions by young thugs.
We have also learned that free speech is a scarce commodity, so will avoid speaking our minds in future........shame really.
.

you know what I am like when I can't really have my say, and this English Riot has got to me. Of course, we are more refined the other side of the bridge, that is why we charge you lot to cross the border
