And I think that is quite right.

[QUOTE=prestonjohn;10372268]it comes as no surprise to me that the Russians are now more numerous than the Brits.Russia is mostly a complete s**t hole so coming to another s**t hole is right up their street.Child pornography, prostitution and gangsterism and drunkeness are par for the course in most Russian cities. I would say 90% of my old friends who visited Goa and stayed in the Candolim area have stopped coming because they don't like sitting with Russians who behave as they own the world, instead of a land rich in resources but with little civilised culture.QUOTE]

Why is it that the bad elements of nationalities seem to congregate in North Goa (Not British of course)? is it 'like' attracts 'like'? In our short trip to the South this time we met some pleasant Russians who were pleased to try out their very basic English in conversation.
Went to a hotel for dinner and a Russian group were having a 'good-bye' party and the dancing was amazing. One rather portly middle-aged man appeared to be a retiree from the Red Army dance group he danced for ages. Spontaneous applause from all who were there.

NRIs being taxed for wedding rings
8 Nov: Deccan Chronicle. NRI associations say that air travellers arriving in India are made to pay customs duty even for their wedding rings. As per current rules, a man can bring in Rs 10,000-worth of gold and a woman Rs 20,000 worth. This is equivalent to 3 grams and 6 grams respectively. Since a wedding ring is likely to weigh much more than this limit, passengers have to declare and pay import duty for them. Passengers are regularly stopped and either made to pay the tax or keep the excess gold in the custody of Airport Customs and take it back while returning abroad

FEMA Violation: Fine instead of property seizure
9 Nov: Herald. In what seems to be good news for foreigners whose properties in Goa were confiscated by Directorate of Enforcement, GM Parrikar has said that the State may request the Centre to compound the fine instead of confiscating the property… The Directorate of Enforcement has so far confiscated 13 properties out of the 482 cases that have been listed for FEMS violations

UK to end financial aid to India by 2015
9 Nov: BBC. The UK is to stop giving financial aid to India by 2015, the international development secretary has announced. Support will be gradually cut by about £200m ($319m) between 2013 and 2015 before being wound up completely. Minister Justine Greening said the move reflected India's economic progress and status as a global force

This is ridiculous if true. Most NRIs and wives (including self) wear wedding rings, mangalsutras and bangles as a routine.
They are not going to leave these items with customs!!
Didn't see any problems in September when we arrived.

I like an early morning walk along the beach - North towards Utorda (Zeebop) or South towards Colva & I see Eastern Europeans - most of them don't speak! Occasionally you will see a group of them on a night out & I've had a few " das va danyas" with a smile & a hand shake.

As always, there's good & bad in every creed & colour (end of! Thinking of objecting, well don't, cos what I've said is ****ing true so don't even try & debate it).

Bipat,

I wasn't answering your post as I didn't reply to your 'question' about North Goa. I only 'quoted' your post because of your reference to South Goa & I suppose this 'tenuous' link wasn't really clear.

You mean it only concerns Indian passport holders?
The article states "air travellers" and "returning abroad".

Most of the tourists we get in the north of Goa are package tourists from the Gulag i think, maybe they give them a holiday at the end of their sentences ! But yes there are good and bad and its always the bad ones who stand out from the crowd. However it doesn't detract from the truth that a large percentage of the Russian intake are from the wrong side of the tracks. I have met great people from Russia in the past but they were mostly backpackers who had decided to come to India to learn something of its culture and history and see the country. Most of the RTs i see around Arpora only see as much as they can avoid from the back seat of a taxi that's delivering them to a bar ! Watched one particularly drunken male trying to light his cigarette from the incense stand outside of the temple in Arpora while his girl friend posed from pictures in the doorway. The priest was too scared to say anything to them as they were "Big Geezers and quite drunk. "

Says that a Russian Official is s running a scam and conniving with Immigration and police officials to give preference to Russians landing at Dabolim. Also says that the Russians landing are from the low end ! Ie, not big spenders......
