The bit that really got me was

The Deputy Superintendent took the victims to Calangute police station, where the culprits were identified from a line-up of police personnel. The errant cops apologised and returned the stolen money.

And that was it? Certainly how the article reads...............

All they do is suspend them on half pay until it quietens down, then they are transferred to Ponda or some other Gods forsaken spot in Goa. In the polices eyes the only mistake they made was to shakedown the wrong people.

Agree about the police. But, Ponda, Gods forsaken???? many would hope not all the old temples are there. We and hundreds of others regularly go there. Town is expanding also.

'wrong' meaning one of them has a relative who is a senior police officer - otherwise this would never have seen the light of day.
If you read to the end of the article there is a little give-away as to why the cops thought they were OK - at least one of the victims has what sounds like a muslim name!!!

Oh please!

THe best you can say about Ponda is that it hasnt been spoiled by tourism..........it has managed to be a total (and expanding) sh*thole all on its own.

And the temples are, mercifully, outside the town itself.

AS to the original post, ask any of Goa's finest boys in brown where they would rather be posted, Cal/Can or Ponda?

My post was meant partly as a joke!! calling an area famous for its temples "God Forsaken".
Shithole seems to be a favoured description of yours!! Most cities with industry are not pretty.

It is accurate, and appropriately descriptive.

Never thought of Ponda as a city though, and the "industry" is not in the town centre, is it?

Definition of a city in India relates to population size, 20,000 or 70,000 not sure, I have seen both figures.
As to your description it is your opinion only, but I have seen previous posts of yours describing whole of India as such.
Yes Ponda city is not very pleasant. I was referring to the entire area of Ponda. We visit Shantadurga temple at least once a year, OH since childhood. I don't find the area of Ponda "Gods Forsaken" or a "Shithole", just my opinion!!

One of the best books i have ever read about India and the police service is Vikram Chandras."Sacred Games." Its funny and educational at the same time. The main characters are a Mumbai police inspector and his Sergeant.I think some one on this forum must have read it.Been out since 2006.I also think its part of a trilogy, the second and third parts not written yet.Good read.
