There was a big debate back in the 90's as to whether Goa was liberated or invaded. I seem to remember it ended up in the high court of India and have vague recollections of the court ruling in favour of "invasion". At the time the UN was very critical of India's excessive use of force, a true sledge-hammer to crack a walnut situation, and a good opportunity for India to flex its muscles and show how tough it could be to neighbouring countries. By 1961 the Portuguese were so weak, ans stretched to the limit colonially, a good "BOO!" would probably have sent the actual colonial forces scuttling back home, despite Salazar's bull and bluster.
Therefore it is more than possible that the UN still records Goa as occupied...........in many ways it is!

Surely that is going down the same road as the buffoons that run Goa, who frequently behave as if the place is a sovereign nation by passing/enacting laws in a cavalier and haphazard manner, usually illegally within the constitution of India of which they are a part.

What reason would anyone have for pretending that Goa is a nation? What would be its national identity? Portuguese names, facial characteristics, buildings, Catholicism........probably better to consider it still a colony of Portugal then?

There is a benefit, and it has nothing to do with colonialism, or political aspirations locally. But it creates a better understanding of the whats whys and wherefores. It is a huge mistake to ignore the realities of Goan history and its societal makeup which is very different from the rest of India. It is foolish in fact.

Well done J5 for spotting this outrage and this is on the back of the BBCs Humphery Hawkselys piece on the British aided toilet blocks that were built in Bombay ( not P.C "Mumbai" ) and then sold off privately :frown:
One of the authors of the News of the World piece Gethin Chamberlain, has been known to look at expats now and then and wrote a piece for the Guardian sometime in April about Goa, he is very much on our side :thumbup:
May I suggest to ALL( yes even you "peepers" )to flood the News of the World with our stories ? :fingerscrossed:

Just read the report in Goan Voice and it does not surprise me one bit. What i find surprising though is the complete silence from Goan newspapers..! Not a peep from these guardians of law and order, not a peep from the all the NGOs involved in fighting corruption in the state. Are they all that embarrassed because it involves children and foriegn aid ? Or the fact that the money has been coming from the British Isles, the place where most of the ex pats originate from and the place which, according to the Goan government, the place where most of their supposed troubles that plague Goa emanate from. Dole Tourism, Paedophiles and Sex Tourists,Loutish drunken Chavs...etc....But not outright thieving, that's an Goan Indian speciality and from the scale of it, it would seem they have taken it to a university degree level.

they will never put anything into anything other than their own pockets. Many say Indians are racist, and castist, and religious bigots. Whatever the case,no one should be surprised at the "discovery" of millions of charitable monies being lost to their very own Indian 'administrators'. There is no honesty and less scruples. Which is why Mahatma Gandhi focused on it so much in his day.

Brits would be shocked, BUT no one in India is. Donors should ask for incorrigible Indian counterparts......then there will be zero charitable activity and billions of dollars saved.
