Went to the interview, all good, nice and relaxed with friendly people,took the job, really excited money seemed pretty fair for ns, holiday was poor but then you cant have it all. Had to call to say won't be coming after all.:curse::curse:, selling our house has been hard and wont clear the outstanding debt,A brilliant opportunity has slipped through our hands.

My husband and 2 kids came out here in August last year my Husband works for IMP he worked for the RAF 22years then BAE, we are now trying to sell our house here and move back as are 6 other people we know who work at IMP 30 Brits have left so far this year! I You would like to chat of other info feel free :0)
Nova Scotia is lovely so are the people IMP sadly bend the truth when it comes to cost of living and many many other things :0( I am not saying dont do it I am sure IMP have many happy brits I just havent met any

Hi littleflower, so why are all the brits leaving IMP? By all accounts the wages are reasonable for the area. Are the working conditions really that bad?

Hi Wages are not to bad taking into account my husband hasn't got the licenses to work anywhere else. If you have licenses you can get a far better paid job here. Working conditions are "slack" in his words a joke!!! but as I mentioned he is ex RAF and they tend to have there ways. :0)
He finds the union part hard to deal with if they go on strike YOU HAVE to do it its really not worth trying not to... BUT you will NOT get paid. 10 days holiday can be really hard. You will be told that you can work overtime to get christmas off and paid, As he was told by the lads on the first day it NEVER happens no one has ever managed it :0(
If you want to PM me any questions I will get him to reply, all I know from a "wifes" point of view is we are leaving because I want my husband back!!! He has been so unbelievably unhappy with work that it spilled over and he just became really unhappy all the time, we have been planning this for 4 years thought we had covered everything but he didnt think a job could ever affect him so much and it really has! now he is going back to BAE and is already his happy self again!! we now have to sell our house though and the market is slowing here.

I would be interested to know where those figures came from, its just that I was talking today with someone about as highly placed in the company as you can get, and his information differed slightly, I was informed that so far in this recruiting round, (last 2 years) IMP has succesfully recruited about 50 skilled tradesmen and women from the UK so far 3 have left due to financial difficulties mainly down to not being able to sell houses in the UK.

The person I was talking to today also intimated that IMP was about to go to the UK again to try to recruit more skilled personnel. They cant recruit enough were his direct words.

Conditions on the shop floor are somewhat different than those in the UK, so what. When in Rome etc. Plus as was also intimated to me today, the shop floor for the majority of Brits recruited by IMP is only the first stepping stone, they fully expect their UK recruits to quickly progress up the job promotion ladder, infact actively encourage it. I know its possible, I did it inside 6 months.

What IMP do offer to those wishing to move to Canada is a leg up, a kick start. They need skilled workers, the UK has them, but no one should commit to coming to a new country on a whim, everyone who has an interview with IMP should do some basic background research on Canada before commiting to moving across the pond, especially if you intend to bring family with you.

As I have offered before and will offer again anyone who wants to talk about what it is like here can talk to me on the phone if you would like to, PM me first and I will give you my details.

No IMP arent the best company in the world, but I have seen far worse, and few better. You wont get thrills spills and all the whistles, But you will get a job, for many that is an offer that is the first step to a new life, take it for what it is, a short cut to a better life.

Hi Snort
We know 4 people who have now applied for the Canadian forces 2 are brits. 4 people who have already left and gone back to the Uk and 6 who would like to go back to the Uk one looking into legal action, sadly those 6 cannont afford to return to the Uk so have to stick with it :0(
We planned to move here for years and as you said just looked a IMP as a stepping stone but have found that with out licenses he get get work (doing a sim job)
As long as people are prepared and keep the recruitment monies aside to pay them back if they wish to move on then I am sure they will be fine. I just wanted to point out that what we were told in the interview (which I was asked to be present for the informal part,) was not what we found when we got here. When my husband was shown round on our recce the VERY high employee showed him around and asked "us" to work with him when we arrived as so many Brits were leaving the company they wanted to try and prevent it.
We still came and I am please we did, although its not worked out for us I am really pleased we followed the dream and "for us" realized the UK is better for us and our kids. I do know brits here who love it (none work for IMP).

I am not sure either of you have the exact figures. I can name four who have returned to the UK from my hangar alone this year. However I concur with snort on the when in Rome bit and as for the 10 day overtime banked for holidays I have do it in less than a month and are looking forward to my discover trips in NS. i also know three, like snort, who have move up in the company very quickly, so the opportunities are there

NS is great but day to day living is more expensive than the UK. You have to budget and it is easier if your OH works or you have a second income. Do not be put off IMP is is a great stepping stone into Canada but it is a difficult place to work. It takes tolerance and patience and a huge pinch of salt. If you have children then NS is far better for them than Uk but you need to work at it.

Think long and hard about coming to IMP if you are interviewed, ask questions. NS is only what you make it. For some it is an expensive misjudgment for others it is the Canadian dream.

Thanks for the post Winston. Nobody yet has really said why its a difficult place to work. What makes it difficult?
If youre used to 7 weeks ALA plus public holidays then I can see why only getting 10 days off would be annoying, but not difficult. Going out on strike and having to get used to a new work ethos may be annoying. But again, it doesn't make it all that difficult (or does it?)
Many off the people who go to IMP are ex servicemen, many who have done their 22 years and have a reasonable pension. Again i'm struggling to find out how, if you have a reasonable wage for the area and, potentially a second income, why it's so bad.

Hi all

Not all the ex-servicemen working at IMP have done the full service. many have been working on the contractor net for a while and earned considerably more money. However at IMP it is not all about the money it is the work ethic and the union. The company has expanded so quickly that it is still trying to find its feet. The union controls the shopfloor and frustrates the management. It is a daily battle between the management and the union. Caught in the middle are the people in staff positions who are not union or management. Too many people spend too much time looking for reasons not to work rather than just doing the work. I cannot say if the steel mills and coal mines of england we the same twenty years ago but that is what happens at IMP.

If you come here to work you will get on, but the attitude of those around you will be frustrating. Its a fact and you have to live with it. NS is great and I spend more time at home than at IMP. So as far as I am concerned they gave me a start on the Canadian dream and I will do my level best to work at it. They paid me to move here which is not to be sniffed at, many of our friend here paid all the expenses from there own savings.

Once you have permanent residency then the choice is yours.

Stay or move on: your choice.

Winston hit the nail on the head, If your work ethic says work for a fair days wage, you will get on, if you want to slack off, you will probably flounder.

This is a company out to get a good reputation, and obviously make a profit.

This is a company trying to expand in a reccession!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will not make your fortune with IMP, but you may make enough to get you started in a new life in CANADA.

They will pay you some money to get here.

They will expect loyalty in return for their generosity.

They do like the British work ethic.

They do cow tow to a Union

It not only frustrates the management but most of the Staff and some of the shop floor workers.

Rise above the politics, look after your own interests.

It is true, in my experience that those who have a pension coming in have more of a realistic chance to cut it. No offence to those that dont, kudos to you infact, we dont know how we made it without a forces pension to help. If you made it without one well congrats.
