The Thyroid Thread
#661
Hi everyone,
I am joining this thread very late, and have to admit I didn't have a spare week to read all the previous posts.
Anyway, I am here on a student visa, have been since Feb. Obviously I have been avoiding Drs etc as I don't want anything which might have a negative affect on getting PR at the end of my course.
BUT, it has just occured to me, that I could have symptoms of an under active thyroid. My Mum, Grandma, Great Aunt all have it. I was tested once about 15 years ago and was fine, but it has just clicked that many things I have had could be symptoms.
In the last year I have put on weight, although my eating has not changed. I have gone up a clothes size, and most of the weight has gone to my stomach, giving me a pregnant look (to the point that a couple of people have asked
). I had assumed this was because I am getting older and your body changes (I'm 29).
I have always had a very sharp mind, until about a year and a half ago when I started forgetting things, even what I am saying sometimes. I had put that down to the stress of coming out here.
I have been peeing more often, also assumed due to age.
I can often feel very tired when not having done much (put down to being unfit).
So does this sound like I need to get a blood test? Would this have any impact on getting PR? I have a year before I apply.
Thanks very much for any advice.

Hello pumpkin blossom.
Seeing as your mum, grandma and great aunt all have under active thyroid, you could have your thyroid checked on a regular basis.
My mother and sister have under active thyroid (hereditary) and i did not develop mine until i was twenty three, so it can start at all different times.
The symptoms i have experienced in having friends come down with it, you notice a puffiness in the face until they have been put on the thyroxine.

Hi Peeps,
read this thread and thought i would share my experience,
in the summer 2005 i lost nearly 3 stone in two months (i'm 6'3") and weighed 11 stone, couldn't work it out as i was eating 4 meals a day, my hands had also started shaking it was at this time and the fact that i couldn't hold a cuppa without shaking the tea out of the cup that i thought i had better go and see the doc.
the doc told me to go for tests and gave me a form for blood tests, a week or so later (when i couldn't write properly) i thought i'd better go and give some blood.
the nurse said that the results would go to the doc's in about 10 days and that he would contact me, the next morning my wife rang me and said the doctor had phoned and he wants to see you today (oh sh*t).
apparently i had graves disease which makes your thyroid overactive, but i had none of the other symptoms such as bulging eyes,
doctor said if i had left it a bit longer, i could have had a heart attack, he then put me straight on beta blockers (propananol ) and anti thyroid (carbimazol), over the course of the following year i had a blood test every month and my dose was reduced and the beta blockers stopped after 6 months.
in nov 2006 i stopped taking the tablets altogether as the results showed i was back to normal (
) had another blood test last march and still fine.
so don't think that for one minute that an over active thyroid is for life, i have been advised by the consultants that it could return and to be aware of the symptoms.

Thanks for sharing Darren, thats very interesting stuff. Glad you are well at the moment!
I've had a good day, I fell down the stairs and have seriously bruised my right buttock!!! I must've forgotten how to come down the stairs correctly. Bloody thyroid!! Must've been the thyroid, I was paying attention, honest! After the initial shock it was good to see my hubby laughing till he cried.

When I was taking Oroxine (equivalent of Thyroxine in the UK) it was costing me around $60 (I think) for 6 months supply so not too bad.
Not a problem to have at all here...you've got far more control over your treatment so if you're not happy with a particular doctor, you can just choose another one

I've lost count of the times I've walked into walls recently. I turn a corner and totally misjudge it and whack into the side of it. I'm usually covered in bruises!
Hope your bum feels better soon

Depends on what tests you have done, but for the general thyroid panel its free (in NSW anyway). I've read on here that they'll only test FT3 once or twice a year in certain areas, after that you pay - but I havent found that to be the case for me. I've never paid to get my FT3, FT4 or TSH tested. You do have to pay for RT3 though. None of it is very expensive. Its when you move across to Natural Thyroid Hormone that the costs mount up. If you're doing ok on T4 only meds then its not gonna break your pocket

To update with Nic.
She's not holding much faith that Thyroxine is working best for her, and as the doc Donna recommended gave her a prescription for the pig one, she's gonna give it a go!
Not the best terminology there I know, but I know you'll understand ...
Anyone got any idea what she can expect to pay?
Thanks.
