I never had my thyroid tested in the UK; I put everything down to the menopause and it was only when I left the country that I found out I'd probably had issues for years. (Hmmm, sometimes I wonder, is it better not to know? )

Go to your doctor armed with knowledge, ask lots of questions. I know a little knowledge can be very dangerous and docs get fed up with patients who think they know it all, but showing an interest and asking questions you think you know the answer to but want to steer them round to talking about helps.
Thank you Seasider i will go with a list of questions next time and a note pad its good to hear other people's storys so thanx again.

I am happy.
Tiddlypom, talking about wheat and wheat product, you know i was cutting out milk and dairy product or cutting down and switching to other products to see if that helps my symptoms.
Well i have just been told when i went to the hospital that i might be Gluten free, what ever that means.
They said you see it on labels of products.
also they say its associated with the thyroid.
Would you have any idea what that means as i dont know anything about Gluten free and being associated with the thyroid.

TSH = 0.3 mul (3.35-5.50)
Free T4 = 18.8pmol (9.8 - 23.1)
My legs constantly ache as do my arms/shoulders.
Now that I am in Aus - I am determined to try to improve my health and well being. Any help and /or advise would be great

many thanks

Hi Rita, talking about aches and pains in your legs, i must admit when mine are like that i bandage the bottoms up over night and they feel a lot better in the morning.
Hope this helps.

Going back years, when i first started on thyroxine i had to have blood tests every three months till the level had sat on a regular level but now i have been on the same dosage for a few years i have to have blood tests yearly and they wont give me any more thyroxine until i have that blood test done,
so there is no getting out of it.

May I suggest that you send an email to your GP, explaining how you are feeling and that you'd like to have further tests....including your reasons why.

You also have the right to ask for a second opinion...you could see a different GP, or ask to be seen by a hospital specialist.

I have not read back to read how long you have been on thyroxine, but as i mentioned before they will test you every three months or so until they get the levels right and if it looks like you are stable on the one level for a few blood test checks then they will leave you to go yearly checks.
But in the mean time if you feel unwell or extremely more tired then you are supposed to go back to the doctor who will send you for a blood test just to check the levels and see if they need changing.
After being on thyroxine for a while you will begin to know when things are not right in how you and your body are feeling so i would always advise you to go and see the doctor no matter how much the surgery moans when you ring up.

I was sent to a hospital specialist ten years ago about my thyroid and they told me i could have a heart attack any moment, i was in my early thirties.
Never explained why they said it.
But i am still going strong today, apart from feeling cross that some doctor sat there and told me that.

Ok, Dr Myhill's site is back up and running.

I was interested in the 'Environmental Approach' - I've increased my omega 3 +6 and have noticed a drop in the occasional hive situation for myself.

Me too..
Just been diagnosed with Hashimotos...7 months after having my 3rd baby. I developed Thyroid antibodies in pregnancy, but apparently they weren't affecting my thyroid until recently. I developed awful itching all over...my GP ran a few tests and my TSH was really high....just been started on Thyroxine....with a plan to re check bloods in 6 weeks....

Hi Guys,

Just hoping for some advice from thoses more expereinced with all of this than me!
I was only diagnosed with the Hashimotos last week, and so I've only been taking the 100 ug of thxroxine for 5 days, but the itching is still awful...not really hives as such....just 'tickly'....really over sensitive skin..?
Has anyone else experienced these symptoms?

Hi, i hope that i can give you some help, i have had under active thyroid for twenty years, since my first baby was born.
And i have had Hashimoto's for thirteen years now, and in the last four years or so have had my skin irritating with itching.
It is quite hard to explain to some one what makes it irritate.
Can i ask you, have you made a note of when it starts to itch, is it all the time, when you come in contact with people that have been working e,g on building sights near dust and dirt, and while at home is it when you do house work e,g dusting cooking.
I ask these questions because that is what makes mine itch with my hashimoto's.
I know it sounds silly but i have been under the hospital and had blood and skin tests which turned out fine. they have been told me it is the auto immune acting against its self.
Myself i would advice you to go back to the doctors and let them know.
When you get the itching try having a bath or shower and see if the itching stops.
Let me know if this works and i might be able to help more.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.
I feel itchy most of the time to be honest....nose and face mainly I guess....
One stray hair resting on my skin really tickles and I have to brush it straight off....this only started about 10 days ago, but it's beginning to drive me crazy!!!
The only times i've ever experienced this in the past is at times of major stress....so I'm beginning to wonder if it's that..as we are planning a big move, new(ish) baby, alone here with 3 kids etc.....I find when i'm out and about, i'm less aware of it.....
Tanya
