Where your phone can airplay it, do that. It is more convenient to have it on the ATV though. The app store for the Apple TV is still growing. There will be some worthy apps to come out on it. If you want workout apps (not a bad idea) or cooking apps then they are already there. Plus, things like learning to play the guitar. These things are better on a dedicated device that isn't going to turn the screen off.

If it had Apple Maps and Apple News, it would be a really great device. Right now, it's pretty good though.

BTW, only tangential to streaming media, but AnyDVD has gotten shut down. Looks like hollywood/us government managed to convince Antigua somehow.

I've watched the first few episodes of Occupied on Netflix. It's a Norwegian series set in the near future, where a newly elected government decides to stop all oil and gas exports in order to help stop climate change. This pisses the EU off who then get Russia to 'occupy' Norway in order to secure production

Subtitled and in English, it's well made and very different from the US and UK stuff that we mainly watch. Kind of topical too

It is available in Netflix AU as well. I watched the first episode several days ago and it seems decent, though we'll have to see where it goes from there.

The best find in recent times was a show titled Tyrant. Rarely do you get something that's so easy to get into, and also manages to intertwine strong scenes with ones that will have you laughing so long it's almost dangerous.

This will have a big impact. I see 3 options if this goes ahead:
Pay the TV tax
Use the login of a friend or relative in the UK who has paid the tax
Torrent their content

I guess they have to do something as they are effectively giving away all their content to the world for free - subsidised by those who pay the TV tax. Just goes to show what a stupid system this is

The best solution would be for the BBC to become commercial and do away with the tax. But there's the ridiculous notion in the UK that this would cause some kind of drop in standards and quality and would be the end of the world. Bizarre

Kind of depends on what they might practically do.

If they simply change the law to say "need a licence if you watch TV either broadcast or catchup" then the impact would probably be limited (since we aren't in the UK).

Obviously there is also geoblocking already in place, but they could up that as well.

Finally, if they said "enter your licence number here to gain access" then it would get very different - but there are a whole set of issues about that as well.

Given this muppet is also looking at ad-blockers (on rupert's orders obviously), and given the stupidity of their 'porn hosts register here' attacks - I don't have a lot of hope they won't do something monumentally stupid and regressive. The authoritarian tendency they exhibit means they will probably try and 'control' the internet' - and get surprised when people either ignore them or go offshore, or both.

Should have simply gone subscription and global. Playing whack-a-mole with laws and licences isn't going to cut it going forward.

No - I'd say that the Amazon Fire TV was your better option - and I say that as a complete Apple tragic. The issue is of course that we all want our media in one place - nobody likes flicking between HDMI connections just so you can watch a streaming service that isn't on the platform you're currently watching.

At this moment in time, neither Channel 4 or ITV have apps in the ATV4 app store. The Amazon Fire however has both of those, plus BBC and all the usual US streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, Sling, Spotify etc plus Plex and VLC. It also have voice search and a similar app ecosystem to the Apple store.

If I had known the above at the time I would not have bought my ATV4. The Apple device is great, don't get me wrong, but these days they all have similar hardware and so all it comes down to the content available on each. I'm seriously considering flogging the ATV4 and getting the Fire.

The conversion of Stephen King books onto the big and small screen has had a patchy history. Some of his greatest stories have been totally ruining in the process - but 11.22.63 is not one of them. Watched the first 3 episodes and have found it to be really good. They have captured the look and feel of the early '60s superbly. Recommended
