Re: POM, an insult??!!
The very first thing I thought when I saw the picture was how the pom is portrayed, overweight, sandals with socks and the suntan marks below his shorts - deeply offensive . :D

Their chief tosser was interviewed by the ABC (here) and the Western Australia's Ethnic Communities Council has recently joined the debate (here). Incidentally, I have discovered some solid evidence that the slang term "Pom" was originally an abbreviation of "pomegranate" (used as rhyming slang for "immigrant"). The authority is no less a figure than D H Lawrence, who made the following remarks in 1923: Pommy is supposed to be short for pomegranate. Pomegranate, pronounced invariably pommygranate, is a near enough rhyme to immigrant, in a naturally rhyming country. Furthermore, immigrants are known in their first months, before their blood "thins down", by their round and ruddy cheeks. "Jimmy Grant" soon morphed into "Pommy Grant"; possibly an oblique reference to pomegranates (which fresh-off-the-boat Poms quickly resembled). But whatever the reason, "pomegranate" for "immigrant" became the new rhyming slang of choice. This was inevitably truncated (as most Aussie slang words are) to "Pom". And here we are today. :) |

Oh, and the final word from Tooheys:
Proving that it’s not just the Germans who lack a sense of humour, a bunch of English expats are trying to have the word Pom banned in Australia. The so called ‘British People Against Racial Discrimination’ have complained to the Advertising Standards Board about a series of ads for Tooheys Supercold which claim the beer is ‘cold enough to scare a Pom’. Says Tooheys spokesman Paul Foster, “Supercold is the coldest tap beer on the market in Australia, and given the Poms enthusiasm for warm beer we're just pointing out that they may have issues with it.†Icing the cake very nicely, Foster went on to say, "Frankly, as a Pom, I'm not the least bit offended." |

But if the guys are for real, and I'm not sure that its not just them taking the piss, haven't you just somewhat proved their point by calling them wankers for daring to say they don't like the term Pom? Their argument is that "Pom" is a racist slur on the same level as "Paki", "dago", and other derogatory terms. This point is not proved by my calling them something else entirely (namely, "wankers"). Incidentally, you have misrepresented my position. I am not calling them "wankers" simply because they dislike the word "Pom". I am calling them "wankers" because (a) they claim that "Pom" is on a par with n****r, etc. and (b) they want this word banned, and its use classified as a criminal offence. |

Nope. How would that work, exactly? What's the logic there - if any? Their argument is that "Pom" is a racist slur on the same level as "Paki", "dago", and other derogatory terms.
