Great... totally agree, i just hope given their exposure in the press the Aussies have enough sense to realise that these people do not represent the rest of us Poms (same said for the English and Welsh cricketing board - is that they best they could do in terms of support!). Ideally, sensitive souls like this would be transported to one of the isloated cattle stations or offshore islands where they would never have the indignity of ever having their precious nationality sullied again and leave the rest of us to live in the real world.. I hate the way the press always give idiotic people like this coverage.... I certainly don't mind be called a Pom

Indeed he is exactly the type that would have been deported to Australia years ago and from which gene pool most Aussies get their attitude

who likes drinkin warm beer? never mind the pom reference, no one I know drinks warm beer. A nice cold glass of Stella all the way.

The point is, it's just a stupid advert to get people talkin about their beer, and guess what, that's exactly what were doin, so they've advertised right then!

I couldn't care about being called a POM! so what, I've been called a lot worse in my lifetime, and I'll always take pom as meaning a lighthearted jibe at my nationality, that's fine I can handle it. But there are always people who take insult to anything you say to them and this stupid "British People Against Racial Discrimination" is probably a bunch of old twats anyway!

I have no problems being called a POM, it gives me a quiet sense of satisfaction in that its meaning is "prisoner of mother england". Unless I am much mistaken, it was not my relatives who came out here in the stinking hull of a boat with a good dose of scurvy and the clap! I had much fun in responding with this to pommie baiting at the recent test in Brisbane. Sure stops them in ther tracks! Loved all the hats which had the tonk a pom logo on them, that is a fab advert. Why don't we have such a good sense of fun when the ashes are in England? :p

What does POM stand for anyway? I've been told it's Prisoner of His Majesty because the prisoners wore POM on their clothes. My mum says it's from Pommegranite.

StellaDaves link above your post gives as good an origin as you are likley to get..

This Aussie does not intend the term as an insult, no matter how it is interpreted by the recipient. Have a look at my signature for the duration of the Ashes to see the sort of context it might be used in. :D If I happened to be English I think I would be more offended at redneck (rooinek), limey, roast beef, redcoat or other such terms.

The derivation is largely lost in the mists of time but I've always taken note of what my grandfather told me and he was born near the end of the 19th century and fought along side 'Poms' in WW1 - the pomegranate theory which is similar to the Rooinek in SA i.e. their skin burned easily.

Fancy playing Devil's advocate?. Change the word Pom in all this light hearted banter for Nig*er.. suddenly it doesn't look so much fun does it?.

 What's the relevance of changing a term which surely most would not construe as offensive and replacing it with a term which hopefully everyone would find offensive. It's a bit like saying what if I called you terrible instead of nice. The point?

If someone is going to be offended at Pom how would they feel about these stereotypes? eg how would a female like to be called a Pom compared to some of these?

Its a term that was perfectly acceptable 50 years ago. Nobody would have batted an eyelid if you used it then. I am just drawing comparisons.. personally I don't give a monkeys if I get called a Pom.. but just look around these boards and you will find some that do.. One of the basis for racism is to attack people based on sterotypes.. isn't claiming that all Poms don't wash and whinge all the time racist when viewed on those terms?
