Just like the word nigger was no doubt acceptable years and years ago ,you would be hard pressed to find some scrawny arse white boy calling a black guy ''nigger ''these days and the black guy replying ''yes masser ''.You call me a fu--ing pom to my face and your going to get some reply ,that is my choice . |

Re: POM, an insult??!!
Haven't read the whole thread so somebody may well have said this already but....
It is difficult to be offended by any slur when you are English. How can you, when you originate from a country with amazing history, beautiful countryside, fabulous culture, great universities. (but shocking weather). Whereas if you are from a third world country which has many, many problems and you are constantly seen (probably wrongly) as a drain on society and the attacks are nasty because of the colour of your skin, then it becomes offensive. |
Re: POM, an insult??!!
Reminds me of a quote:
'No man lives without jostling and being jostled; in all ways he has to elbow himself through the world, giving and receiving offence. ' Thomas Carlyle or you could go with Alexander Pope... 'To every trifle take offence, that always shows great pride... or little sense.' ;) |

So in my opinion if you comment on aboriginals and blacks and are an english immigrant to australia you are a hypocrit and are worthy of the word pom etc ,these english advocate racism in society and thus get upset if somebody objects to it . How does it prove that Aus is 20-30 years behind? |

I'm with Pheonix here, I would never condone Racism in any way. I have been on the other end of Racist abuse from a Pakistani in the UK before I came and even then I can see that for what it was, one tosser in a bunch of decent people :) |

This is the sort of stuff my FIL spouts, mainly because he hears it on the radio and ends up repeating it, not that he believes it, but because it's 'popular' and maybe he's fearful deep down. I have been in many of those conversations and I have never sat there and agreed just to 'fit in'. Anyone with a backbone wouldn't either. |

I saw a quote by Hevs saying she cringes when she hears "Pakis" on the radio. This is what I say and it applies to how bad 'Pom' is. There is such a thing as cultural relativity. Do people cringe because of what Paki came to mean in England in the 70s? Or because noone in the world should ever abbreviate a name? Things are different in different places. I cringe when Singapore executes a young bloke for being nothing other than fool. Deterrence? How can it be when all it takes is a fool for an hour and regret it every hour after they are caught. I cringe every time a life is considered cheap in the Middle East, or Iran executes some criminals against an interpretation of a religious code who would be spared elsewhere. Cultural relativity. I can't see how Pom can really be that bad, if you take it personally then I think there is more to your problem that meets the eye - there's a correlation somewhere of disgruntled people and a whole host of other things. I can see it pissing people off, but it is a minority - uranus said 1/6 as if that proved his point - it doesn't. When people can't take Australian ways, or talk about dullness, and or why someone jumps on a MBUK bandwagon: Most just want to be back with friends and family, others choose to 'politicise it'. You see it time and time again. I sometimes feel for them that pointing out this sort of stuff sounds very noble and adds to their cause. The reason a minority of people can't live in Australia is because they see themselves as liberal (for want of a better word) people. They then choose to go and live in some of Australia's least liberal areas which is like any other like place in the world, like the sort of places that breed that English animal the 'yob'. I learnt one thing after 3 months, local people like these do not go and live in these areas. I know this because my 'liberal' work colleagues tell me. They avoid them like the plague. It's only naive British migrants who think these places are the bees knees just because they can think it buys them a lifestyle they fancy. It hurts when they feel ripped off by, really developers, of all people. I also think a lot are not as liberal as they like to think they are - again its gives them credibility after they've made an honest mistake. |

I love living in Aus and hated living in UK, even though I had a fabulous life in UK in terms of job / lifestyle / money etc. I'm a Pom and I'm proud to be a Pom...I have absolutely NO desire to be an Aussie. I'm happy to have duel citizenship so I can come and go as I please. I am not an Aussie ......I'm a Pom and proud of it:) |

Are you saying i'm overreacting to the term Paki? Or agreeing its cringy? Don't mind either way, but been as you were quoting me and all that ;) :p :D |
