This was the same day I decided that I wanted to see more of the world, and realised that the UK would be a handy springboard into Europe; indeed, next year I shall visit Kiel (Germany) where my father was born. This was the same day I decided that I wanted to step outside my comfort zone (where I had been stuck in a rut for far too long). And it was the same day that I decided to sell my house and purchase an investment property, to keep myself in the Australian property market... ready for the day when I return home Down Under. And most surprisingly, it was a Tuesday. :D |

:) Its another reason why I find Australian humour very close to my own and why sometimes I think alot of English people are misunderstood. Scarcasm backfires very quickly, and if you're aggressive too, well! |

OzTennis :) Australia has an overinflated ego when it comes to itself just like the americans they think the whole world will stop if they wernt around when in reality they are no different to anyone else on the planet . Any body that knows their history will realise that just about every tin pot nation wants to beat england at sport because of the colonial past and they want to beat the big bad wolf . Australia has to anchor on to something as it really hasnt grown up as a nation yet and lack cultural identity [aborigines excluded],so they anchor on to sport ,whereas i believe the english population in general would rather watch the outcomes of a murder on coronation street that watch the painfull long winded test match ,or even better just go down the local and have a few jars. |

Most countries that I have visited have their own identity however 'new', quaint or otherwise. I think Australia has much more identity than the US, is far more selfware and the lack of identity accusation has always been a cliched accusation from anyone who would rather be somewhere else or is disgruntled. If you go to some more rural neighbourhoods or speak to educated Australians you'd be surprised that they don't all conform to stereotypes and can often reconcile the BBQ/sport thing with other more serious diversions. It's one of the things I like about the country - a bit of mix but all accessible. It never ceases to amaze me, someone moves to the wrong suburb, city, mixes with the wrong crowd, regrets a move for personal reasons, and all of a sudden it's an entire nation's fault.. |

Re: POM, an insult??!!
Dear me, looks like I've been misquoted yet again.
To "the creature" - I didn't tell you to get your arse out of the country. You already told everyone (in another thread) that this was your intention. I merely said that I hoped you would be leaving sooner, both for your sake and everyone else's. The original post is here, if you want to check it. As for "untold damage" to my country's image; sorry, but I just don't think I'm that influential. Thanks for the compliment, though. Perhaps I won't turn down that interview with The Times after all. ;) If you want to cry "arrogance" when somebody stands up to your rabid attacks on their country, that's your call. I think it's a bit childish, but hey; suit yourself. Just be aware that not everyone will share your reality - including fellow Poms. Got a problem with my posts? There's a simple solution. The "Ignore" button is easily identified and quite user-friendly. Fill ya boots. |
