I guess we can play your game if the word is ever used in conjunction with the oppression of Brits in Australia, when hordes of green hooded Australians burn Yorkshire Puddings and effigies of cream scones on British born people's lawns, or hang them from trees just because they're POMs, segregate them from using the same restaurants/washrooms/public facilities, or make them sit at the back of buses (they could perhaps use signs at the front 'POMS at the rear') Landladies can hang signs in windows - No POMS here Then we can play your game. Frankly, I find your argument spurious to say the least. Lynne |

I know there are conflicting views of what POM stands for, but if it is taken as Prisoner of Mother England, then presumably it will not include those from the Celtic nations. Any comments... Cheers, Paul Incidentally, not all convicts were English; they were a diverse group, including Irish, Scots and members of GB's other colonies. Australia's first bushranger was born in the West Indies (where he worked on a plantation), escaped to England and subsequently transported to Australia for theft. |

I have attached a photo of an original convict uniform (the only one still in existence). The mythical acronym is noticeable by absence. |
Re: POM, an insult??!!
From what l read no one in OZ called English POMS untill 1915, maybe it started with Aussie soldiers during WW1, probably looking for a nasty name to call the English after their brilliant idea to send them to Gallipoli to invade Turkey, dropping them off at the wrong beach right in front of the clifftop Machine gun nests. :p

Re: POM, an insult??!!
I am very un-sure as to why an English person would be insulted by being called a POM, sureley its just a term of endearment. for example: when a Scotsman visits England and gets called Jock.
You work it out  GreanTea |

These are the generally accepted casualty figures. The British had 205,000 casualties (43,000 killed). There were more than 33,600 ANZAC losses (11,500 killed) and 47,000 French casualties (5,000 killed). Turkish casualties are estimated at 250,000 (65,000 killed). |

However, can the bloke in the article be called a hypocrite as he seems to think it's okay to abuse Aussies but it's wrong for Aussies to abuse the English? |
