You're right. I would have thought the dobbing in culture would have sorted this one out, or is it a taboo to dob work collegues in for sickies? Back home, my company prided itself on having a sickness rate way way below the national average and in fact for the first 2 years it was zero, there is just noway I could take it here if I was to do it all again. I mentioned this once before but always in the back of my mind when we were coming here I had a mind to recreate my litte empire but here, maybe in a few years time. Things like brussels, wee directive, new H&S rules, new anti handicapped discrimination rules all helped me to decide to run away to the land of plenty, because in my rose coloured mind having a business here would be much better and less restricted.
This delusion wasn't based on fact as I have since come to find out, with Australia having some of the most anal and intrusive H&S and employment laws you could think of, here you dare not employ on a permenent basis as it is very hard to get rid of anyone, no matter how crap. Add to all this the sickies and well I would need to get my head flushed periodically.

Just proves to me the grass most defo isn't greener when not viewed through rose tints!

At least we are starting to accept that Australia does indeed have more culture than a yogurt pot, even if it is an undesirable one for a first world country.

This is interesting and demonstrates a classic case of unions being hoisted by their own petard.

We never employ permanents either. It is just too risky. We stick to casuals.

Oz is about 1.5... and probably always will be given that its a zillion miles from anywhere that matters.

I've always felt that although Australia is essentially the UK with sun, it also reminds me very much of our third world experiences in SE Asia in many respects.

Definitely taboo to dob people in for sickies. They even tell us in advance when they are going to be sick so they don't have to get up and phone the office!
Personally I can't do it - I have too much of a conscience and had it drilled into me for so many years not to go sick cos it put more work on everyone else.

Re: I cannot believe Oz is as bad as this.

Regarding my post some good points were made.
I like the U.K, do not hate it and think parts of it are as nice as anywhere in the world. I am not angry or bitter.
My reason for wanting to leave the U.K was never made on crime or immigration.I have been a victim of crime and I do not fear it either.

If you read my post I said it was the first time I really thought about the crime that way in nearly 2 years so the crime is not my main reason for wanting to leave the U.K.
I run every other day whatever the weather and regularly come back soaked. Today is Sunday and we are taking the kids to the lake but we have been stuck in for pretty much the last 2 weekends which hacks me off. One of the main reasons I want to leave is the weather, remember last years very, very long winter.
My brother has lived in Australia for years and I know from him that youngsters cannot get on the housing ladder. He has also been addicted to hard drugs in the past. I personally think that burglaries are worse in Oz as it does not seem to be so bad in the U.K anymore. No one turns your house over for a dvd player anymore like they did in the 80's.

The fact it takes forever to go anywhere in the U.K also hacks me off.

Yes there are lots of nationalities in Australia but I still think it is a long way behind the U.K regarding a lot of social issues.I still think the U.K is going the "wrong" way where as Australia has a lot of catching up to do.

BTW if the U.K is not that bad why do polls constantly show a huge percentage of people wanting to leave the U.K, are they all wrong?

i live in the midlands
i have a job which i'm payed above the national average
i have a fairly big semi-detatched house
we have a new car every 2 years
i have a foreign holiday every year and several weekend breaks in the Uk
we have 2 young kids who are doing great at school

I want to move to Aussie ,if for no other reason, than we want a change.
I want to experience something totally different.I dont want to live in the same place for the whole of my life.

Atleast when i'm old and knackered i can say i gave it a go.
