And so, the point is still valid, its not the Country's problem, perhaps the person(s) should look within themselves. Perhaps they left for the wrong reasons, or perhaps they just dont fit here, could be a million reasons they are not happy. That is all perfectly acceptable and reasonable. But why blame the Country that they chose to move to? I am not being specific here about Australia either. Its any Country that people move to, then decide its not for them and then proceed to belittle, ridicule, pick pieces out of the Country and even so much as patronise, abuse and belittle the people that havent moved yet but are wanting to?? This primarily is my only problem with a select few posters on this forum. Its how they come across to me in their posts, anyway.
:) I never quite understand this accusation of "blaming the country". Most people who are unhappy here will admit that they have screwed up. Why does explaining what you don't like and pointing out real problems amount to "blaming the country". I think there are a few too many hyper-sensitive people on here. As with the UK, people are entitled to point out what they don't like. But often these posters are under the foolish assumption that those things wont happen here. Going back to the OP, I also thought crime rates would be lower here (because the sun shines?). My illusions were shattered when one month after I arrived a girl was murdered on her way home from the local pub in an affluent, peaceful area about 3km from here, and her body left on the local primary school playing field. I agree with you about some of the really bitter and abusive stuff, but for the most part I think the people who post negative stuff are just calling it like they see it and trying to offer the benefit of their experience to temper people's expectations with reality. There are many people on here who want to pretend this reality doesn't exist. It always amazes me how people feel so threatened by the negative posts, and see the forum as being invaded by a vocal minority of whingers or people with an agenda to run down Australia. I see it as a forum full of overly positive stuff, with occasional negative posts that add a touch of reality. I think a healthier attitude is to take note of the negatives, and take the rose-tinted stuff with a truckload of salt. |

This is really the stuff I am talking about, and i know it comes from both sides. It just seems the majority of the really nasty stuff comes from a 'few' of the unhappy ones and in turn results in winding people up to retaliate. Which, IMO isnt healthy discussion, nor debate.
I agree, negative posts are every bit as important as the positive ones. Trouble is, a lot of the highly opinionated stuff makes the best reading. It's the life and soul of the forum. |

Also once you get used to the names that post in there regularly you'll see that post of us do have things we like and laugh about in posts on here. I am excepting the eminent Arkon from this of course, and I'm sure he'll agree with me!! Even me - there have been some threads on Tassie lately, I love the place, it has the most beauitful scenery in the world,a nd I am always the first to say so. I'm sure all of us at time remember that we did have a dream once, which we followed, and as long as the others following their dreams are realistic and not too starry-eyed, then they have as much chance as we had of settling here successfully. :) And now I'm off to put my Mods hat back on and wield my big stick. |
Re: I cannot believe Oz is as bad as this.
We'll go with the 'see what its like when we get there' hats on...
currently we live in the 'most desirable post code in england', its beautiful, our country side is stunning, wages are pretty good here, the local schools are top in the county (although they have issues) BUT... the town has an amazing drug problem i didnt know just how bad it was until i managed a couple of 'town' pubs, the rich indulge in 'coke' here, and the poorer are dragged into 'crack', pills are £2, less if you want them in bulk..(3 or more) my sons high school has dealers at the end of the school field, they get 'busted' yet their back the next day, our village has 3 pubs, ive found/been offered 'coke and speed' in all of them, my older kids get offered everything. its not just the drugs, i know theyve got them a plenty in OZ too... we have an alarming number of 'scroaty' families, Cheltenham is either beautiful or beiruit...theres no middle ground here! my kids will never be able to afford a property here, their education (if they go into further education) will end up a huge debt around their necks, (i know, i still have mine) we work hard, pay our bills, but we cant make headway! we will enter oz feeling very fortunate to have the opportunity to 'do' the adventure and will give it our best shot...we dont expect to find it easier, or to be able to stop watching our kids! Can't categorize everyone into rose tinters and bitters, it don't work that way! Lots on here have very high expectations of Australia and/or wish to escape something. A few know what they're in for. Some have came and found out it's not for them, others love it! Some are here just to wind up. Some are here not a british nor an expat just wanting to fill their time chatting with others, (can recall one bloke got chased off for being a troll as he didn't want to move to Aus, just started a thread about yorkshire, which some overly sensitive peeps got very involved in). Hopefully the majority of people on here will learn the pros and cons of moving and gain an insight into the stress and problems moving to the other side of the world can cause. Would hate to think I was going into emigrating with my eyes closed. As it won't be easy and life will probably be different (not better) once we get there! |
