Just wait till you get to the story about Jacob (grandson of Abraham) conning his brother Esau out of his birthright. I can remember the RE teacher glossing over the dodgy morality underlying this story.

I have to say, I am going to stick with it as it is increasing my understanding of the religious type no end. Personally based on what little i've read so far, you just must be a little sick in the head if you read it and actually believe in god as a result. Beats me how it could make anyone believe. I have a theory as to why people lived to 905 years old etc. let's say you lived a couple of thousand years ago before computer records and diarys. You guess the year say Abram was born, so you can write a story about him, you then have no idea when he really died but you guess based on something you read it was near another historical event say 900 years later, so what the heck he must have been 900!

I think what now amazes me most is people become religious based on the bible fundamentally, even tho they havn't read or understand it. Yet the book is a load of tosh.
Mmmmm.... true, but they have the believers gene - faith, trust, need & gulliblilty all rolled into one. Even if they did read it they'd believe it, thats the thing isnt it - no talking sense to em, batty as brushes.
Probably only the odd person has read the whole thing. One thing you can take away from your time here

So how did you come to possess a bible? Did you bring it with you?
Did you nick it from a hotel?
Kind of curious.
Must say this thread has me thinking I should have a read as I havent for many many moons. Talking of which, its a blue moon 2nite

I got the bible because I forgot to opt for the non religious version of the citizenship ceremony. So I had to stand up and swear on the bible. Which turns out was a present from the mayor, even got my name inside the cover! So as well as a pot plant and a medal I also got the much more readable converted to the level of Australian readability and comprehension version of the bible. Just as well because I don't think I could read a proper one with big ye olde words.

I cant believe you got a bible thrown in, thats brilliant, bizzare but brilliant.
I dont remember the bible swearers getting a bible at mine, never got a pot plant or medal either though.
Its quite funny the way you're split though so you sit seperately depending on your allegiance to the the *bog book & god

*that was meant to be big book, an accidental slip of the hand whilst typing which seemed best to leave

The problem is not the bible, its what the churches are focusing on, that suffering to becomes good, they will never talk about jesus and mary's, teachings to each other, on how to purify yourselves, to ascend into the heavens, the crusifixtion , was not the message, but part of it, but the real message is not told fully, how to transform yourself into a pure energy being, many tibetian monks also believe this, the quest to become pure, so you can transform into an eternal being of pure energy, self sustaining. thats a message churches will never touch, yet its present in all realigons. Hinduism aswell, Egyptian, they all teach this.

Unfortunately, in Buddhism, it's only available to men. Not quite the cuddly lovely religion everyone makes it out to be.
