I'm sure this has been said before too (by me!) but there is no web site in the UK that will give me even a sniff of private health insurance there - you have to enter your name, address and phone number and 'one of our friendly consultants will call you'. I HATE that!
Sorry, this is an Aussie whinge thread. I think private health care/cover is ridiculously expensive as well. And the price of a pint, and a sad, flat looking pint it is at that. Car repairs - you know that no matter what's wrong with the car it'll cost you $500 or multiples thereof to get fixed. Aussie politicians are a bit of a rip off too. Water is expensive but I kind of understand that, since we haven't got much. Any sort of tradesman call out. Typically $100 before they even walk in the door. |

How can it possibly be justified?
I'd rather pay personally than have mega outages. |

Well I am only going off what I pay now compared to what I paid a little over 2 years ago in the UK. Private Health Care yes, a pint yes, but lecky and motor are about the same for me. Actually lecky was a damn sight cheaper for me until recently - when they discovered the rest of the world was charging more :) ....... Trademen of course ..... That's a salaries thing .... You pay yourself what everyone is getting ... Salaries are generally higher in Oz except in a few finance related circumstances

Sorry Beoz, I worded that badly. What I meant to say was I agree that private health cover is Oz is dear, and I wish I could get an idea of what it would cost in the UK because even the sites that offer a 'free quote' want you to enter your phone number so they can call you - and call you - and you get the drift :) As it stands I have no idea if it would cost 50 or 500 pounds a month.
Before I left the UK I had private health cover through my employer, and it was 45 quid per month, however was fully inclusive - there were no gap payments - it simply covered everything. I have no idea if it's still available. Here I pay about as much in AUD, but I have an insurance policy that I effectively can't afford to use because of the gap payments etc. S |

Mrs Beoz looks after our health in Oz and we've had to jack up with coverage and I think we pay over $200 per month. My work has just introduced a scheme where I can claim up to $1500 of that annually but it is a taxable benefit. |

The surgeon I was advised to use wanted $3000 and the Medicare advised rate was $700 so there was a $2700 gap. With a bit of shopping around I found another surgeon who would do it with no gap, but I wanted the top guy so I phoned him back and was able to negotiate a fee with a $500 gap. As I always say, everything is negotiable in Oz. |
Re: Aussie rips offs
I never had health insurance back in the UK but here I think its great. Every year since I've been here I've been 'up', in terms of getting more back than I've paid out. Admittedly I've never needed a major op or hospital visit, but in terms of opticians, dentist, physiotherapy its been great value.

Re: Aussie rips offs
went to IGA yesterday, when I saw them selling small, fresh figs at $40/kg.
For the last 2 months, my 3-year old fig tree produces about 10 large figs every day. Best investment ever. My Brits neighbours can't get enough of them. Waffles from IGA, cream and figs on top. It's heaven. |
