Same here, never ever had any kind of medical insurance. - And if you do have to go to an emergency room just say "Private" when they ask you, get the immediate treatment and then hand them your medicare card afterwards and say "The current government is a corporation".
If you are in ill, and in hospital it is their word against yours and if you claim you didn't realise you were getting the private deal, you can also say it was unsolicited.... |

This is an interesting article which touches the many reasons why things are so expensive here. Lots of comments, some of them hair-raising. The very bad news is high prices are so entrenched (due to high labour costs, high property prices and government regulation) that we might as well get used to them. |

Replacement irrigation sprinkler heads, for example: nearly $60 in Australia, US$12 in the US. The weird thing is, Australians will whinge about costs (if they have any knowledge of worldwide shopping) but if a Pom does he's being "unAustralian. |

Re: Aussie rips offs
It's clear to me that a lot of people, including Australians, are on to the expense of specified items in Australia compared to the rest of the world.
(If they're not - tell them - diplomatically - we need public opinion on our side - and it is happening - read the comments on the Newspaper sites. There has surely been a change in the last year or two since people started talking about it on this site long before). What gets me is that the quick fix is to take advantage of the strong AUS dollar. What happens when the AUS dollar weakens but there is no supply-side change over here. Lots of variables! Do people think we will see change soon, later on? Is it definitely happening already? I went to the shops today and found some items that I considered cheap. Do people see the situation changing, slowly, quickly...how long? |

I now believe being Australian means being shafted by other Australians?
They know it They are happy to take it :p Whenever I see the Australian made, owned, etc claim I can't help thinking to myself that it'll probably be overpriced. |

Sad but true.
Whenever I see the Australian made, owned, etc claim I can't help thinking to myself that it'll probably be overpriced. I mean, have they ever had a tradition, an expectation, that would say a product was of high quality because it was produced in Oz? German > engineering - yep, we know there is a connection (however much its not true anymore). But Australian > Rough and Ready - at least that's the association I get.Japan > cheap, high tech - or at least it was Even French > Cuisine - although most people would send a meal back if it had snails in it. So why would you advertise as Australian Made as a positive attribute? Give me New Zealand lamb over Australian any day. |
