I read recently how much it costs per day to keep a young offender in custody. The costs are staggering! How exactly do you propose we pay for the upkeep? Taxes would become astonomical with less services to the general population because all the resources would be going to keep these people in prison for 10+ years.

Really, as I said earlier, these kneejerk reactions do nothing constructive. They only add to the tensions.
