Also as an example a friend and I went into the city to celebrate Australia day, it was dead as a dodo, doesn't happen in Melbourne and Sydney.....

They say there is a population of 1.1 million but most of those people live in the vast suburbs and the city centre is often pretty dead at weekends....

Its not my idea of a city!

PS I fully intend to be proactive and move away!

You should have been at Glenelg... had a great night...............mm:p

Lol! Glenelg is not exactly 'buzzing' with people. Had quite a few nights out there, it was ok, but expensive in my opinion. Some nice places to eat out, but then after a few expensive drinks there is the odd place like the pier or grand for a bit of a bop, but bit like going to ya mates mobile disco. Prob why there is a queue of teenagers waiting to get inside (dont know where they get their money from!)

North Adelaide is not bad for a night out, some nice pubs and bars there - but a bit far considering we lived in the south. Taxis into the city cost us around $35.00 so expensive added on to a few drinks and a meal. Im not a big fan of going to clubs, but if I go out I like to have a good night! Its a bit like there was just 'something missing', thats all. Enjoyed the Seacliffe Tavern for a meal, drink and nice view from the balcony(watching sun go down), however didnt like the fact that most of the car park emptied at midnight (drink drivers!), saw a couple of accidents out there.

If you lived in London before you left the UK, I would imagine as a mum, you would be happier for your 21year old to go out in Adelaide for a night out. We live in the North of England, its different here and much safer for a night out. Dont get me wrong you still get crime etc,but you get that everywhere dont you.

there is a lot to do here - im intrigued?

I agree with Pompeyblond's comments - you must be glad you are moving on. We were!

Here's my two cents worth on life in Adelaide after living here for nearly 14 years:
1. It is an easy place to live - life on the whole is not stressful (depends on your job and family situation tho - i have had stressful jobs in the time I have lived in Adelaide).

2. The pace of life is slow and is suited better to older people and people raising small children. If you are young, ambitious and crave excitement, Sydney and Melbourne may suit better. As a result not a lot changes year in year out and can become a tad predictable which could be translated as dull.

3. The active time of the year in Adelaide is Feb/March (Clipsal 500, Fringe, Arts Festival/ Womadelaide. Rest of year is quiet.

4. It is generally a very clean city and generally crime is not a major problem for most people.

5. Nice beaches if beaches are your thing. Adelaide Hills are very nice but nicer during the cooler months. The countryside is very dry and brown during the summer.

6. Summer heat can be a challenge, with days in mid to high thirties and into the forties Celsius.

7. Good quality restaurants especially in the city and inner suburbs and good coffee too.

I am sure I could think of plenty more but the only way to be sure is to try it out. It doesn't suit everyone, but it may suit you.:)

There is loads to do here, whatever age you are.
My daughter is 21 and is out all the time, has a much better and varied social life than she ever did in the UK - we lived 20 mins by train to central London.
It's also easier for her to get transport home after a few drinks in the city,a cab costs around $15 to $20 dollars. We are about 10kms from the CBD.
We are never bored, there is a lot to do here, you just have to get out and do it.
Great restaurants, some real good pubs, nightclubs, festivals, theatre a good lot of live music etc etc etc....

It may be a city of 1.1 million but its a low population density spread out over a very large area. You only have to walk around one of the outer suburbs and not see a soul about to know what I mean.
Also, with house prices the way they are, not everyone can afford to live within 10 kms of the city, in which case you do have to travel further for entertainment and a cab ride will cost you nearer $30.00. That is one of the reasons why Adelaide is a very car dependent town.

You should work for the tourist board:). You would have sold me but we have already decided to go to Adelaide and am in a lucky situation that I have lots of family in Sydney so we can go there if we are bored:) but I am not fussed on Sydney that much anyway.......that is just my opinion on Sydney.

I may be easily confused but I don't understand what you're saying, whether you're being sarcastic or not. Apart from anything else you mention that South Australia is flooded with South Australians - go figure, but then you say

I think he's telling South Australians to stay in SA because his area (which appears to be northern NSW?) is being flooded by SA refugees.

Anyway, regardless of any confusion over this particular question, it's pretty clear that the overall aim is to give SA a thorough pasting

He sounds a little bit bitter...maybe the SA government sent him packing. We don't like his sort here, it's a local town for local people you know

So if you don't like tit, does that mean you now bat for the other side? Not that it matters, just not sure what it's got to do with Adelaide.

I would like to ask the mods to hold a stewards enquiry: no thread on the pros and cons of Adelaide is complete without some numpty mentioning Snowtown. So far we've had four pages and no reference to barrels. C'mon, folks. Don't disappoint.

Well dannykaty did we learn much from these pages, other than it's an emotive subject. We've only been here around 18 months and the place suits us. The answer to what Adelaide is like, or any other place, is subjective and the answer depends on the question. Without knowing what you are both into, it's a difficult to say whether this place will suit you. Unless you're moving from one of the large conurbations (London, Birmingham or Manchester) in the UK then this place isn't as small as people make out, compared with other cities in the UK. True the CBD (city centre) is relatively compact, but the suburbs (according to Wikipedia) stretch some 90kms (56 miles) from north to south on the coastal plain.

I think Merseygirl's list summarises the place pretty well and that's one of the most useful posts in this thread. Given your ages you can give Adelaide a go for a couple of years and if it doesn't suit move on to somewhere else in Oz, as pompeyblond's in the process of doing.

Good luck
